Why I regret getting Straight A1 in SPM
Written by Akira Wong, first published on his personal blogI nearly killed myself in high school for getting a straight A1 in high school. I nearly committed suicide just because of the stress and conflicts I had to go through to secure 16 A1 in SPM. Yeah, I got myself a 16A1 recognition. I was awarded a scholarship from JPA, and is currently studying in Intec and is going to further my study in US. However, it is because of this education experience and the people who I meet around in Intec that I gradually opened my eyes and have a clearer view on what I truly lost throughout the struggle to acquire straight 16A1 in SPM.
1. I lost friends and family
In the end you will find that friends and family are things that you can’t replaced with money and fame. The high school memories you spent with your family and friends are valuable cause these are memories that you created when you were still a teen, and you will never ever had a second chance to be a teen again. Much of my high school time were spent in studying and tuition. In the end, when I graduated from my high school, or even my current college, I was wondering: where are my memories?
2. Lack of sleep.
This is really true. When people keep looking at you shining glamorous as the “16A1″, you yourself know the best that it was paid with real hard works. Unless you are a genius, a good result has to be achieved through hard work; it’s the absolute. During the SPM I had a serious sleep deprivation and I forced myself to revise my works starting from 3 a.m. I have an average 3 hours of tuition per day, and subtracting my school time which is 7 hours per day, I had only 14 hours to do all my other things. Homework is directly proportional to the number of subjects that you took, so does the time you need to spend for revision. With the extra curricular activities coming into the schedule, my average sleeping time per day is 3-5 hours.
3. When A1 becomes just the average.
You will have no idea how easy it is to achieve A1 in SPM. One of my friends who almost did not study his Sejarah yet can still get an A2 in his SPM. The number of students having straight A1 is overflowing throughout the Malaysia, and you might be thinking just like me: having more A1 will make you stand out among your peers more. I can tell you the truth that, YES, but TEMPORARILY. When you go to college you will find out that there are more students who are BETTER than you even if their SPM has a Fail in Moral or C in Bahasa or D in Physics. They are very specialized in subjects that they truly love. They are very passionate in their own interested subject. Only when you are in the college, you will realize that, despite all the large numbers of A1 that you have in your hand, you are just AVERAGE.
4. Mediocre talents.
High school is supposed to be a place where you can try out new things in your life, discover what you are loving or passionate in, and nurture these discovered traits. It is a protected area where you are allowed to explore, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. It is the foundation for you to start discovering who you are and what you are good at. When I am at college, A LOT of my friends have their own talents. They play musical instruments; they take stunning pictures, they are good at socializing, things that you can’t learn if you are just confining yourself surrounded with books and books in your own room.
5. You forgot what you have learnt
I can’t denied that it is a good way for me to expose to things that I might not have chance to study, for instance economic and commerce study. It is a really great experience to learn things beyond your stream. But when I am in college I forgot almost most of the things that I have learnt in high school. If you calculate it you find that it isn’t really a good deal compared to what you had lost. The reason is that SPM is so examination-based that you, in spite of how passionate you are in your subject, will subconsciously study for the exam. With this attitude you tend to forget what you have learnt the moment the exam is over. I am still passionate in business study, but how many OSKIC you can join when you need to focus on 16 subjects and promise to your teachers that you can get them all A1?
6. All and all, nobody really cares.
Wake up! Nobody cares how many A1 you will have in your certs. JPA or Bank Nengara or Petronas might have a glimpse on it, but in the end, nobody will be amazed by your certs. Ask your future boss and he won’t really care a shit about it. It will be a past. In the end it is what who you are that shines to the others: your characters, your personality, your experience! A1 is not worth the price if you lost all these.
But wait! I need straight A1 to get scholarship!
It could be true. Some families are in dire needs to have a scholarship to provide their children a tertiary education. But trust me, JPA is not the only way to have the scholarship. Opportunities are everywhere. If you have the character, the personality, the experience and the courage to try things out and explore the possibilities that you can have beyond JPA and SPM, you will realize that, you can still success without a scholarship. I know friends who can get admitted to top university in US without a JPA scholarship (cause he doesn’t have straight A1 in his SPM).
So now, what should I do?
Nothing is too late. As for me, I realized this very truth when I am exposed to more people around me. I began to pick up interests and nurture them. I became more extrovert and socialize more when I am in college. I am not afraid to try things new, even if it means things that are embarrassing. I read more as compared to my high school time. I am not saying that study is not important; I am just saying that knowing that what you really want in your life and who you are eventually is so much more important than just the numbers of A1 in your certs. (now they are having A+ instead of A1, but it’s still the same principle). Look further, my friends. My result is truly average now, but hey! The points and prides in my resume have tripled.
Reply: “Why I regret getting straight A1s in my SPM”
Written by Akira Wong, first published on his personal blogFirst of all, I would like to thank all of you who had read, commented, and shared my blog. When I first wrote this blog post I had no intention to brag about my success in getting straight A1s, nor do I have the intention to brag about my scholarship. I apologize for my inconsiderate writing if it disturbs you. That article was purely one of my reflective essay on my life when I came across an American student’s blog on why he regrets getting a 4.0 in his college. I was very touched by his writing and I can sincerely “feel” him, I guessed. It had been 2 years since my SPM result were released when I wrote that article. I had changed; I am relatively a little bit more mature than I used to be when I was in high school.
I am glad that my story can somehow be an inspirational story to a few of my peers or youngsters whom I had never met before in my life. It demonstrates that in spite of how many As I can get in my high school (or how glory the media had portrayed me), I am still a very normal person. I have emotion (as a teen). I can be weak at sometimes. I can’t write well in English. I am socially awkward at times. I quarreled with my friends. I commented things I shouldn’t comment on Facebook or twitter. Yes, I was labelled as a hardworking and smart student, yet I still need to undergo hardship and struggles. I admitted that I failed before, and I do fail one of my test for my current semester now, and in the future I believe I will fail in certain things in my life as well.
To my seniors and people in the working force, I admitted that I fall short in my lifetime experiences as compared to the experiences you guys had. I had never been with a working team before officially. I don’t have a PhD or Master. There are a lot of things that I still need to learn and get things right in my life. I am still 20 but I am willing to learn humbly. The comment bar was not activated initially but I took the initiative to activate it because I want to listen to your opinions as well. Constructive one, of course.
Of course, there is no point crying over spilled milk. At certain point I do feel regret. I regret why I couldn’t stay closer to my grandmother before she died all of a sudden in a pharmacy shop. I regret why I couldn’t just take a little bit more courage to say “i love you” to the girl that I really like before. I regret why I couldn’t spend a little more effort in continuing my piano. I regret why I made my mom cried… … the list goes on. What has happened, had happened. All I can do now is learn from it and move on.
Different people have different voices and opinions. I respect every one of it. But, in the end, this is still my life, my story. I am the ultimate author responsible for my own life. Put it in a very casual way of blogging, “if my life sucks eventually, I am the only one to be blamed of”.
& thanks again for the encouragements and supports you guys have sent over to my Facebook account and email. I am still in the “shocked” mode as my casual blog can actually become a sharing trend in Malaysia in 2 days… … All the best and good luck to all new SPM freshies out of high school in your future endeavor.

No worries. Wishing u all the best!
ReplyDeleteIs never too late.
ReplyDeleteI feel you bro. Many things I regretted during those years. To me. What done is done. Thanks a lot bro. You make people like us (A's SPM) feel not alone. Thanks and really appreciated it.
ReplyDeletelife is a journey . its an infinity as we do not know when is the doomsday . live like u will live forever . live today like today was your last day .
ReplyDeleteI had better results than what u had if the results slip above is yours. So I guess I'm somehow able to say something about all your points given above? :P
ReplyDelete1) Maybe it's just you who are not socializing. I didn't have such a problem when I was in my schooling days. In fact, I'd give whatever I can to relive my high school days.
2) I made sure I had enough sleep all the time. No lack of sleep problem for me.
3) I agree with you on how average A1 or A+ is but there are a lot of people who actually put in effort and study but still can't achieve the As. So yea, it may seem easy for us but it may not be the same for others.
4) I think it's just your own problem on this point. I myself have exposed myself to many activities and have my own set of talents and is still able to get my As.
5) have to agree with u on this. So no arguments.
6) some people care to be honest. You probably haven't met such a person yet I suppose.
Anyway it's good you manage to find a better way to live your life now. Good luck in your future undertakings.
Zzzzz....good for u. Zzzzz.
DeleteHe said he got 16A1, im sure your resultd are not better than his. Blhis insights are for the majority of students who honestly wasted their lives studying away 18 hours a day. In the end, when they enter the work force, it solely depends in how u do the job. Trust me, most of the time the book smart ppl lag behind against the book and street smart. Our education system emphasize too much on curricular when they should be focusing on developing multi talented students (the ability to study 18 hours a day can be considered as a talent, depending on what you do for a living)
DeleteHey, i m sitting the spm exam this year, ya many people told me that if u wan to get a scholarship u need to score straight A+, but u said that ur fren can get admitted to top university in US without scholarship, may I ask how to get that?
ReplyDeleteA scholarship has nothing to do with the university you are going for. I have no scholarship and Im admitting to LSE this September. Just do well and apply wherever you want.
DeleteExcept for the top Uni, It's very easy to get into any Uni in the U.K. It's the money/scholarship that matter. If you're rich, then good for you!
Deletemany talented students in Malaysia have the results to get into top uni's in the world, the sad thing is only a few of them have the opportunity to be sponsored or come from an affluent family. But, university is not the be all end all of things. What really matters is how well you perform in your work, your attitude and soft skills which determine your success in the workplace. Degree from a prestigious university is still just a paper, it depends on how you utilize it and build up from there after graduation. This is for those who think academics is everything, its not!
DeleteRelax bro.. nobody knows which are the right paths and which are not..
DeleteIt's a part of the journey..
Some people were born talented and some requires hard work to get what they want.
My advice to the SPM candidates this year or years to come, pass or fail, it is not the end of world.. life is more than than that. SPM is like 0.0001% of your life.
What's important is that, you study the things that you love and not what your parents ask you to.
Trust me, when you go for a job interview, you would realized that SPM just don't matter. Most of the interviewers will be more interested in your experiences and not your SPM results.
Just an opinion. No offense intended. :)
Yes.....thanks a lot ! You are right ~~~~
DeleteI can't recall any studying memories during my high school days, my SPM result consists of all ABCD and E , it doesn't really matters. That obsolete education system is not something that you will get any benefit off, so do not bother. I enter Australian University with average results and graduate with 2 consecutive years of Top student award , the award doesn't really reflect how much you have gain from the lost on critical learning skills and experiences during ur school days in Malaysia. It's never too late. Don't let people tell you how you should do in life, it's yours.

ReplyDeleteHey, dont regret anything. You just chose the path less travelled by. X) I took SPM in 2003 and I wasnt an A student. I did have i guess 2 or 3 A's but the others are compilation of B,C,D & even F! Lol. I almost didnt study during my high school. Except for my fav subjects which is English & BM. I just thought that studying was too heavy & complicated. Nobody ever really guided me back then. :( At least you do - well I guess bcos U sounded like most of my successful friends. :) I wasnt serious about study at all even when I got into University. I guess my life was too easy back then or was it just me who just didnt really care about my future. Now to think back and compare to what youve been thru, u r so lucky than i am. At least u get to go to oversea. At least u got scholarship where else i have to pay back my ptptn. Lol. Sometimes I do regret but my past was what makes me what i am now. What use is there to regret? Dont look back in regret but take it as a lesson to learn. U might not be living ur life like a normal stude t in high school but u can still live ur life the way u want right? So live it. Hopefully ur post will open up not only the students eyes but our ministry of education as well.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you.
DeleteTotally agree wh u..there is something for everyone out there..lif3 is simple..don't stress, never regret n seize every moment....
DeleteIm sure you would come out with another article if you did not get the straight A1 you wanted, probably the title of the article would be "Why I regretted not studying hard enough for SPM" or some shits like that.
ReplyDeleteNothing is too late. I only had 1 A during my SPM. Went to college failed my EE course then took Comp Science. Playful and not serious in College or Uni. Barely pass my subjects.
ReplyDeleteEnter working life, be passionate of what you do .. work hard play hard. Show results you will gain what you achieved for.
Again no regrets of what is passed and nothing is too late.
Genius has its limit but stupidity is infinite..
ReplyDeleteLogic will get you from A to Z. Imagination will get you everywhere..
ironically, results doesn't means you're surely favourable in the real world. Even there are many examples of good results SPM students unable to get that scholarship, that's luck because government isn't fair for Malaysians. In summary, the real quality is your personality, communication, thinking, and real world experiences that matters the most. Not, your 'flying colour' result. I'm a past student that don't get any A's in PMR, only had 1 A during SPM and the rest results inclusive of B,C,D,E. Colourful Grades...yeah... and I pass university with CGPA 2.97 only... :)
ReplyDeleteUseful, true open sharing, thanks. You sounded like my son. May God bless you.
ReplyDeletewell..all the best..bro
ReplyDeleteI'd got an excellent result for my 2013 SPM, however my parents forbid my dream to further my study in the course i loved. I felt so depressed. They want me to be a teacher because they think that a teacher has a very stable background *because they work for gov*... They don't want me to be an engineer like i always dreamt of and i really hope that i can become an engineer. Plus, i really wish that i failed my interview. XD... MOM, DAD I WANT TO BE AN ENGINEER, NOT A TEACHER!!!
ReplyDeleteI suggest that you better tell your parents what your really want to be. This because it happen same thing with my friend and he really regret on it (force by parents to enter the teacher field because of the government=stable) . Fight for your dream! It is up to your whether you want to fight for your life or not.
Delete4 me.. straight A's in school doesnt mean u get straight A's in ur life.
ReplyDeleteI almost had straight A1s and I suffered like you too. Good thing you opened your eyes now. I have 2 kids now and I am still searching for my 'lost time' during the studies.
ReplyDeleteJia you.
The 2008 movie "21" taught me about life experience... enough said,it's all in that movie...
ReplyDeleteI studied very hard and get good results just for my mum, so she can brag about it. I have been in ur situation. I regret it. I should have studied for my self. After all i done for her, she said to me, I just good at my study and job. But I'm stupid when it comes to financial and choosing my husband. A1 doesn't mean ur good in everything in life. I should have continue to an athlete in school, continue my piano lesson and socialize more instead of spending all my teen life studying.
ReplyDeleteAre you enjoying studying molecular genetics?
ReplyDeleteWhat sucks is, I need a scholarship to study overseas. I have always wanted to study in LSE, but sadly I don't have "THE MONEY". So, I need to study like a maniac. I got 8A+ and 2A and now the government fucks me up and sends me to matriculation. If I only had 1 more A+, I would have gotten the bursary. My results are pretty much useless now. True story.
