3 mins ago

Malaysia’s first family are under the spotlight as David Cameron flies in

Malaysia’s first family are under the spotlight as David Cameron flies in

As David Cameron arrives to talk trade, Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak’s bank accounts, his wife’s handbags and her son’s Hollywood deals are making the headlines

David Cameron might have hoped that his few final hours in Malaysia at the end of a four-day, four-state whirlwind trade tour of South East Asiawould have been the chance to start winding down before heading home.
Instead, he finds himself flying in to a deepening controversy on Thursday as a multi-million dollar scandal engulfs his host Najib Razak, the prime minister of the former British colony.
Nor is it just Mr Najib who is under attack from his foes in Malaysia amid allegations that he ended up with $700 million in his personal accounts from a state investment bank that he founded.
The Malaysian leader’s wife Rosmah Mansor has been derided for her alleged penchant for luxury and free-spending ways – claims that her husband has dismissed as political assaults.
And Riza Aziz, her son from her first marriage and Mr Najib’s step-son, is also a staple in the gossip as well as financial pages.
He has emerged as a major Hollywood film producer with multi-million property deals in Manhattan and Los Angeles since becoming close friends with a Malaysian playboy investor during their education in London.
So who is Najib Razak?
He’s the 61-year-old scion of Malaysian political royalty with UMNO, the Malay nationalist party that has ruled the country since independence from Britain in 1957. His father was the country’s second prime minister and his uncle its third. Mr Najib inherited his late father’s seat as an MP at 23 and later rose through the party ranks as chief minister of his home state and the serving in the Cabinet portfolios of education, defence and finance as well as deputy prime minister.
It is an impressively lifelong dedication to public service that has coincided with his family becoming one of the country’s richest. His personal profile was low until he married his second wife in 1987.
And Rosmah Mansor?
Ms Rosmah has repeatedly been criticised for her love of the good things in life. Earlier this year, she said she was the victim of “wildly exaggerated” allegations, published by the Sydney Morning Herald, describing her the “first lady of shopping” after reports that she had spent $75,000 on a single trip to a designer boutique.
She was also widely assailed for a reported claim that she lamented about having to pay $300 for a house call by hair stylist. And series of photos showing her holding at least nine Birkin handbags – items that normally sell for between $10,000 and $150,000 each - went viral on social media.
And she has denied allegations that she ever intended to buy a diamond ring worth $24 million that was shipped under her name to Malaysia in 2011 but then returned to the US jeweller. Mr Najib also went public to deny that that his wife bought the diamond ring for his Kazakh in-laws or that they had any links to the “Russian mafia”, as a regional media outlet had claimed.
And the Hollywood connection?
Riza Aziz, his British-educated step-son, has emerged in the film business as a major Hollywood player with his production company Red Granite Pictures (most notably with The Wolf Of Wall Street blockbuster).
He has also made the headlines in the US over complex property deals reportedly conducted with Jho Low, a Malaysian financier whom he met while studying at the London School of Economics and who became famous for sharing jeroboams of champagne with the likes of Paris Hilton.
As the New York Times documented, Mr Low began making some very expensive property deals in the United States in 2010. Those deals included acquiring a $24 million apartment in Manhattan that three years later was sold to a shell company controlled by Mr Aziz for a reported $33 million, according to the newspaper.
A similar transaction was playing out on the West Coast, the investigation continued. “Mr Low bought a contemporary mansion in Beverly Hills for $17.5 million, then turned around and sold it, once again to the prime minister’s stepson.”
And what about 1MDB?
That is the state investment fund that Mr Low encouraged Mr Najib to found and oversee. He helped channel Arab investment into a series of deals with the Malaysian government.
And how’s that going?
1MDB has reported debts of $11 billion. And $700 million of its funds allegedly ended up in Mr Najib’s personal accounts, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation that has been widely reported elsewhere. Mr Najib has consistently denied any wrongdoing or making any financial benefit from the operations of 1MDB.
This week, he sacked his deputy prime minister for breaking ground and saying publicly that the scandal was damaging their party He also replaced his attorney-general who was overseeing the investigation into the allegations.

Prime Minister Najib Razak, right, has sacked his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, left
So why does the family seem to be doing so well financially?
Mr Najib’s office, in a statement, told the New York Times that the prime minister does not track how much Mr Aziz earns or how such earnings are reinvested. As for the prime minister himself, the statement said he had “received inheritance”.
It noted that the family’s lifestyle was not unusual for a person of the "prime minister's position, responsibilities and legacy (of) family assets".

No allegations of wrongdoing have been confirmed against Mr Najib. But it is not the first time that he has been the subject of intense questions about his finances as political opponents have previously focussed on a long-running bribery inquiry in France involving a submarine order that Mr Najib commissioned while he served as defence minister.
Didn’t Mr Cameron just speak out on corruption during his Asian tour?
He did indeed, during a speech in Singapore on Tuesday delivered just a few hours after Mr Najib purged his government ranks of officials raising questions about the 1MDB scandal.
David Cameron in Indonesia
The British prime minister warned that foreign fraudsters and corrupt officials can no longer “stash dodgy cash” in London’s luxury property market as he announced a major review of ownership rules.
He said that the international community has “looked the other way for far too long” when it comes to corruption“, which he called “one of the greatest enemies of progress in our time.
He continued: “We simply cannot afford to side-step this issue or make excuses for corruption any more. We need to step up and tackle it."
So will he be “side-stepping” such allegations in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday?
Malaysian opposition MPs have urged the British prime minister to use his visit to press Mr Najib on the allegations, warning that otherwise the trip would appear to be a vote of support for the beleaguered leader. Privately, one senior opposition figure told The Telegraph that the timing of the visit was “nuts” and “boggled the mind”.
But this tour is all about the realpolitik of international trade for Mr Cameron. He is visiting Malaysia to try and drum up British business deals and secure Malaysian co-operation in security measures to combat Islamic radicals. And he knows he won’t get far with that if he embarrasses his host, however embattled he may be.

10 ways to block an investigation – Malaysian style

1. Deny, deny, deny
PM Najib fingered his famous predecessor Dr Mahatir Mohamad as the likely source of allegations of corruption against him.
“Let me be very clear: I have never taken funds for personal gain as alleged by my political opponents – whether from 1MDB, SRC International or other entities, as these companies have confirmed,” Mr Najib wrote on his Facebook page and on Twitter. “At no point have those making these allegations offered any evidence. All we have heard is that these allegations are based on leaked documents and unnamed investigators,” he added.
However, in a video that has been making its rounds on the Internet, former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was heard saying that the Prime Minister admitted that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) was transferred into his accounts.

2. Tell people the head investigator is sick
Sources close to the government mentioned on July 28 that Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was not terminated from office as Attorney-General (AG) but had declined a renewal offer as he suffers from kidney failure and“undergoes dialysis three times a week”. The Malaysian Bar Council and several opposition lawmakers, have suggested that Mr Gani’s dismissal was unconstitutional, citing Clause (6) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution. Article 145(6) reads in full: “The person holding the office of Attorney General immediately prior to the coming into operation of this Article shall continue to hold the office on terms and conditions not less favourable than those applicable to him immediately before such coming into operation and shall not be removed from office except on the like grounds and in the like manner as a judge of the Federal Court”.

3. Promote people to a position of powerlessness
Four Members of Parliament sitting on the bipartisan Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which has been involved in an on-going probe into 1MDB, were made ministers or deputies in a cabinet reshuffle on July 28. PAC Chairman Nur Jazlan Mohamed was also made Deputy Home Minister. The reshuffle in turn convenientlydisqualified them from sitting on the committee. Newly-appointed Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the appointment of three new PAC members will take place in October.

4. Nod knowingly at your deputy
PM Najib sacked DPM Muhyiddin Yassin in great style. He did it with a mere nod.
Mr Muhyiddin said: “I asked him ‘do you have anything to say to me?’ He kept quiet. I asked him again: ‘Is it about the Cabinet reshuffle, and he nodded.”
He said he asked him again: “Am I not in the list of the new Cabinet?”
“He nodded again.”
Mr Najib appointed Mr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to take the place of his deputy. Four other ministers (Messrs Mohd Shafie Apdal, Hasan Malek, G. Palanivel and Ewon Ebin) were also given the boot but we don’t know if this was with a nod.

5. Demand confirmation
PM Najib’s legal team from Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak sent an email to Dow Jones, the owner of Wall Street Journal (WSJ), requesting confirmation of whether the publication stood by reports that US$700 million (S$950 million) belonging to 1MDB was deposited into his private bank accounts. He gave WSJ 14 days to respond. On July 24, Dow Jones & Company told Mr Najib Razak’s lawyers that there was no need for them to ask if WSJ had intended to accuse the Malaysian prime minister of misappropriating funds as the reports and articles “speak for themselves”.

6. Use the law against your publications
Malaysian authorities blocked access to website, Sarawak Report, which has been publishing reports and documents critical of PM Najib and 1MDB. The website is no longer accessible in Malaysia. Also, Malaysia’s Home Ministry suspended the publishing permits of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily for three months beginning July 27, over their coverage of 1MDB.

7. Allege political sabotage
PM Najib accused Dr Mahathir, who was Malaysia’s prime minister for 22 years, of conspiring with international media to topple his government. The PM’s office said in a Facebook post on July 3 that the allegations against Mr Najib were part of a “continuation of political sabotage”.

Also, Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, an Umno Supreme Council member suggested on July 7 that allegations of corruption against the Prime Minister was an attempt to weaken Malaysia’s Muslim community. “Now they are using foreign media to attack and this situation is up to us to be on which side,” he said at a Ramadan event.

8. Kick an old man when he’s out
On June 18, Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman hit back at the “reckless and baseless personal smears” levelled by former Dr Mahathir against Mr Najib Razak in an open letter to the New York Times. “It is a measure of the reforms put in place under Prime Minister Najib’s administration that Dr Mahathir has the freedom to be so vocally critical of the party and government he once led. But Dr Mahathir is abusing that freedom, and his privileged standing as a former Prime Minister, to indulge in reckless and baseless personal smears against Prime Minister Najib and his family,” he wrote.

9. Blame leaks on a Swiss guy
A former PetroSaudi employee, Mr Xavier Andre Justo, was alleged to have been part of the network which leaked information to a website that alleged the Malaysian government misappropriated state funds. Mr Justo, who is in custody and expected to be charged with blackmailing PetroSaudi, identified about 10 people who bought documents from him to use to attack Mr Najib.

BERSIH 4: The Time Has Come for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation

BERSIH 4: The Time Has Come
The time has come for Malaysians to come forward to demand for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation and a host of institutional reforms to put an end to prime-ministerial corruptions since Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time. All Malaysians are now paying a huge price for the RM42 billion scandal of 1MDB amongst other incidences of corruption, leakages and mismanagement.
Najib has virtually ruled out all possibilities for truth on the 1MDB scandal to be unearthed and criminals to be brought to justice by a series of his political moves on 27 and 28 July:
  • The abrupt and arguably unconstitutional removal of Attorney General (AG) Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail. Since the AG’s Chambers is one of the four agencies of the Special Taskforce on 1MDB investigation, the removal of the AG is a direct interference in the AG Chamber’s work and is meant as a warning signal to the other three agencies: the Police, Bank Negara and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. The constitutionality of such removal — not done on the like grounds and in the like manners as a Federal Court judge — has been rejected or questioned by many parties including the Bar Council.
  • The co-optation of four out of 13 members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) into the administration, namely Chairperson Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed (as deputy home minister), Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican (as deputy foreign affairs minister), Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (as deputy tourism and culture minister) and Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau (as science, technology and innovation minister). As PAC members cannot be holding executive positions, these appointments are Najib’s unscrupulous plot to disable PAC, the only other public institution which is pursuing the 1MDB scandal with the support of the Auditor General’s Office. The acceptance of executive appointments by Nur Jazlan and his three colleagues is a betrayal of the public trust on PAC to act on 1MDB.
  • Continued and worsened power concentration through cabinet reshuffle with the retention of the Finance Minister portfolio by Najib himself and the appointment of Zahid Hamidi as Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) who continues to hold the Home Minister portfolio. Zahid has just ordered the three-month suspension of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily for exposés on the 1MDB scandal. That the PM and DPM simultaneously hold two powerful ministries of Finance and Home Affairs depletes any hope of independent investigations without more attempts to cover up corruption and silence critics.

Holding the view that corruption at the highest level in Malaysia was caused by three malaises, manipulated elections, power concentration at the Executive, and repression of dissents, BERSIH 2.0 demanded 10 institutional reforms:
  1. Electoral reform
  2. Making the Election Commission a constitutional party answerable to Parliament
  3. Barring Prime Minister from simultaneously holding the office of Finance Minister
  4. Parliamentary Reform
  5. Making MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) answerable to Parliament
  6. Separating Attorney General from the role of Public Prosecutor
  7. Freedom of Information laws at Federal and State levels
  8. Public declaration of Ministers and senior government servants’ assets
  9. Repeal of/Amendments to draconian laws
  10. Establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC)
As immediate measures to restore public confidence in the investigation, BERSIH 2.0 demanded the following four actions:
  1. Najib to make public his bank account details, in particular, clarify if the AmBank accounts existed in his name and, if so, show the transaction details for the dates in question.
  2. Najib to take leave as the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and all other public offices he holds pending investigation.
  3. Najib’s, his spouse’s and his children’s accounts to be frozen.
  4. All findings of investigation by Bank Negara, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Police, and the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on 1MDB and related companies to be made public in the fastest time possible.
Najib is taking every possible move to protect corruption. He arrogantly ignores the humble wish of Malaysians for integrity and justice. He has lost every ounce of legitimacy to stay in office.
BERSIH 2.0 is dedicated to an electoral system and system of governance that is free, fair and open. Given the depth of corruption that has been alleged, the allegations that this money was used to manipulate the GE13 and the implication of the highest political office in the land, the credibility of the very institutions of government is at stake. To restore confidence in the processes of government and to allow the continued dynamism of the local economy, the Prime Minister must tender his resignation.
BERSIH 2.0 hereby declares that the Bersih 4 rally will be held on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu from August 29th, 2pm to August 30th. We invite all patriotic Malaysians to join the rally to demand for Najib to step down and the institutional reforms to be implemented so as to end prime-ministerial corruption.
BERSIH 2.0 demands:

  1. Clean Elections
  2. Clean Governments
  3. Save our economy
  4. Right to Dissent
Issued by,
The Steering Committee of BERSIH 2.0, which consists of –
