THE SON OF PENANG STATE DAP EXCO, FROM PROTON WIRA TO BENTLEY, OVERNIGHT.

By Jadryn Loo Hooi Yee

My heartiest congratulations to YB Danny Law Heng Kiang, the DAP’s Penang State EXCO for Tourism Development for having an illustrious and successful son, who are young and handsome as well. When I saw the pictures of Danny Law’s successful son, Nigel Law, that is making rounds in the social media, the first thing that came into my mind is that of Penang’s another famous son, Jho Low.

While Jho Low is well known for partying with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan like there is no tomorrow, with bottles of Moet & Chandon champagnes in full view, Nigel Law is not too far behind either.
It is circulating in the social media that 100 bottles of this fine Moet & Chandon champagnes were corked open in Providence, a famous clubbing place in downtown Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Danny Law Heng Kiang’s son’s birthday party.
However, I can’t be certain of these 100 bottles of Moet & Chandon but Nigel Law’s Instagram account confirmed it that he had an early birthday celebration in Providence with accompanying pictures of him and sexy women and models and of course, the Moet bottles.

Out of curiosity, I also check on Nigel Law’s Facebook. I found out that he either own or co-own Blonde & Brunette Malaysia, a high society hair saloon in Gurney Paragon, which was officiated by his proud father, Danny Law in 2013.
More to this, also from Nigel Law’s Facebook is his picture of holidaying and staying in luxury hotels, dining at famous restaurants in Europe and many more pictures of him partying, always with a glass on hand. Ah…since watches worn by politicians are the talk of town recently, I’ve spotted Nigel Law wearing a Rolex Submariner.
And one picture from his Facebook account that I’m not too sure if it is him driving a Bentley but the watch on the driver’s left wrist and the one Nigel Law wore when holidaying in Siem Reap in December last year is identical.

Oh well, don’t get me wrong, I am not a sour grape and I am not jealous of Nigel Law’s success.
In actual fact, I am amazed yet curious!  I’ve had plenty of holidaying around the world, dining in Michelin stars restaurants, dozing off in the luxurious hotels, cruise ships, trains to suits on plane.
I am very blessed that I am dining in J.W. Marriott Hotel Kuala Lumpur almost every week and the Sous Chef Wong Wing Yuk took personal care for my diet. I’m humbled to be chauffeured around by Azman in my Rolls Royce and other cars. I’m comfortable with my collection of Patek Philippe watches.
While I can account for how my source of current comfort and luxury comes from, and how hard I work for my current lifestyle, like other fellow Malaysians, we are curious about Nigel Law’s success.

The DAP always preach that their government is one that is managing well the public fund, against the abuse of power, clean and without corruption, against dishing out favors for family members and etc etc.
There must be some magic here that I believe their form of government is being passed on to their leaders’ to manage their family affairs too, so surplus can be gained and can be splurged later on, because I remember that Danny Law Heng Kiang started his career as a bank officer before winning the Batu Lanchang state seat in 1999. He lost in 2004 but won in 2008 and became a state EXCO member.

So, Danny, can you share with us your son, Nigel’s success story? His success story is amazing considering that when I knew you during my DAP’s days, you were just driving a Proton Wira and live in a medium cost apartment in Greenlane.
You were so jealous of me, a young girl at the age of 22, returning from NZ with a double degree, driving a brand new Camry and living in Gurney Drive and I thankful to daddy and grandfather, who were successful businessmen of their time. You can say my success is because of my daddy, and I would say, I am forever thankful to daddy.

I remember that once, you even asked me to lower my profile because there are many jealous chaps out there. Then there was once, long after I’ve left DAP that you mentioned that you are still jealous of me and my success. I guess you might have forgotten that you said this to a journalist with and another comrade of yours. I’m myself, I am the master of my own money, and I have nothing to hide, so how can you ask me to be pretentious? Isn’t it your son has shown that hard earned money must be spent for certain comfort and luxury in life, which is very typical of Gen X and Y that your illustrious son and I belong to?

Aiyaa Danny Law, instead of being jealous of me, you ought to share your son’s Nigel Law’s success story so that fellow Malaysians can learn from Nigel the right way to get rich quick without any association with the corrupted Barisan Nasional that your party always accuses of. I think he can organize workshops and talks too, on how to be super rich before the age of 30 without the influence of dad.
It is good money these days to conduct talks and I am sure people will start queuing up from Jelutong to Johor Bahru to get an entrance ticket due to Nigel’s extraordinary story.
Or what about including the talk on how to get rich in Visit Penang programs that are run by your department, plus some special promotions when get a hairdo in Blonde & Brunette? Blonde & Brunette don’t charge RM1200 just to dye the hair, do they? Or they charge even more considering the high rental at Gurney Paragon?
Or Danny Law, are you going to say, the world has got the wrong identity of your son? The Nigel Law’s pictures circulating on the social media are not your son but a doctored picture by Barisan Nasional’s spinning doctors? But I don’t think the pictures are doctored. It is indeed your son! Maybe you’ve forgotten that I’ve met Nigel during your CNY open house. Ah…now I remembered that you mention that Nigel Law Hun Chuen was born in 1989!
So, Danny Law, the respected State EXCO from the “clean government” of Penang,  is it a deal to share with fellow Malaysian Nigel Law’s success story? Your party always preaches for transparency, didn’t they?

10 Questions With… Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “A woman is like a tea bag – you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” This quotation aptly describes the character of Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir who, in my book, is the perfect model of a strong woman

For Malaysians who aren’t hiding under their tempurung, Marina’s extraordinary qualities are well-known. A famed socio-political activist, author, columnist and champion of various NGOs and movements, Marina’s myriad pursuits both inspire and humble all around her.

I became acquainted with Marina several months ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that – despite carrying a very big name and being a celebrity in her own right – Marina is both humble and genuine. Unlike some major international personalities who let their stardom get to their heads, Marina is simply ‘Kak Marina’ – a big sister and friend – to everyone around her.

Marina with her parents
While there are lots of nice things I can think to say about Marina (and God knows I never get star-struck), I’d rather just say this: Marina to me is the symbol of an empowered woman. She stands tall and gracious, but wouldn’t hesitate to kick-a** if she has to. Honestly, Malaysia would be a better place with gutsy women like her.

I thank Marina for being such a good sport in answering my ten random questions below:

Question 1
What single piece of clothing best describes you?
A big, loose t-shirt – because I am casual and relaxed.

Question 2
What turns you off?
Mostly, body odour. But also a lack of a sense of humour among some people, especially about themselves.

Question 3
If you turn into your partner for a day, what would you do?
My partner? I would go out and buy some really cool clothes and stop worrying about whether anyone thinks I’m dressed right or not.

Question 4
What’s the naughtiest thing you ever did in school?
Me? I was never naughty in school. I spent 12 years in a Convent school, where you have to be very silent and very good. It explains everything about the way I am today.
Marina and her daughters
Marina and her daughters
Question 5

What’s your favourite place on earth?
In bed at home, playing Words with Friends.
Question 6

If given a chance, who would you like to exchange roles with for a day?
A really ordinary person who is never recognised in public and who never has to deal with humourless and repetitive cybertroopers.
Question 7

What’s the silliest thing you have heard people say about you?
That I own all those places where you tie up boats.
Question 8

What is your favourite curse word?
It’s not printable, and most people never get to hear it.
Question 9

When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Eight years ago I climbed Mt Kinabalu. For a non-sporty, non-outdoor type, that was totally out of character for me.
Question 10

If you were stranded on a desert island, what five things would want to have with you?
Beautiful stationery, my eye pencil, comfortable shoes, a big fat colouring book with a huge selection of colour felt tips and photos of my family.

In the next edition of 10 Questions With… Fa Abdul aims her wacky questions at Joe Hasham – co-founder of Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, famed director, actor and the sexy voice behind BFM. Don’t miss it!

Stop being childish about Petaling Street, ‘red shirt’ rally leader told

Red shirt’ rally leader Datuk Jamal Md Yunos says he once applied for a business licence for Petaling Street but it was rejected. He now claims Malays are systematically discriminated against in the area.

A hawkers’ association has said Datuk Jamal Md Yunos is turning himself into a laughing stock and behaving petulantly, after the “red shirt” rally leader demanded that Petaling Street be opened up to Malay traders Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders’ association chairman Datuk Ang Say Tee broke his silence yesterday, just days after the September 16 “red shirt” rally and told Jamal that even the Malays were laughing at him. “What will people think? You can’t just simply say you want, and we hand it to you. The Malays are also laughing at his suggestion.

“He is behaving like a child, demanding for things from his mother after being told no,” Ang told The Malaysian Insider.

He also said Jamal could not make sweeping statements about the alleged “immunity” enjoyed by traders in the popular tourist spot known as Chinatown, accusing them of receiving favours from the authorities despite running illegal businesses.

Ang said the authorities conducted enforcement operations in the area periodically, the latest being last week. “We don’t condone the sale of counterfeit products, and if the traders insist on doing this and get arrested, they will have to deal with the authorities themselves.”

The rally last week turned chaotic when a group of protesters attempted to breach the barricade at Petaling Street, forcing police to use water cannon to control the situation. Chinatown had earlier been declared out of bounds by the authorities, and many businesses had closed that day out of fear of any untoward incidents. Jamal had said the rally goers were upset over the “immunity” Petaling Street traders enjoyed, with no action taken against them for operating illegal businesses.

He also accused them of selling counterfeit products and pornographic videos. He had also suggested that Malay traders be allowed to operate in Petaling Street instead of the area being monopolised by the Chinese. Jamal said he tried to apply for a spot in the area 10 months ago but was rejected. In disputing the Sungai Besar Umno division chief’s claims that businesses in Petaling Street were monopolised by the Chinese, Ang said there were Malay and Indian traders there, mostly running food and beverage stalls as well as selling newspapers. He said anyone who wanted to open a business in the popular stretch in downtown Kuala Lumpur needed to submit an application to the mayor but there was no guarantee that the application would be approved as all 700 stalls have been taken up. “You also have to take into account that too many new businesses in the area will affect the livelihood of existing traders who had been there for years.” – September 23, 2015.

Why kid-glove treatment for ‘red shirt’ rally leader, DAP asks cops

Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos has said he is not responsible if up to 5,000 people descend on Petaling Street tomorrow to protest against traders selling fake goods there. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, September 25, 2015.DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang today accused the police of treating Umno leader and spokesman for the “red shirt” rally, Datuk Jamal Md Yunos, with “kid gloves” although he has continued to undermine racial peace and harmony.

This was in stark contrast to police’s quick action against opposition and civil society leaders, even for “non-existing” offences, said Lim. “Why are police treating Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos, who is continuing to undermine racial peace and social harmony, with kid gloves when they are Twitter-quick to deal with opposition and NGO personalities even for non-existing offences?” the Gelang Patah MP asked today. “This is why Malaysians wonder about the police’s double standards in a clear-cut case of undermining racial peace and social harmony, and damaging Malaysia’s national and international image as a safe destination for foreign investors and tourists.” Claiming double standards, he said police would act immediately if the target was any opposition leader or civil society personality. “Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would have roared into action. Why is Zahid as tame as a mouse in this case of blatant and repeated threats to racial peace and social harmony, causing traders in Petaling Street to decide whether to close shop tomorrow? “Police would have come down hard and fast on opposition leaders or NGO personalities immediately on Wednesday morning itself within minutes after Jamal’s press conference outside a police station, but there has been no action, only empty talk by the police up to now,” the DAP parliamentary leader said. The veteran politician was referring to Jamal’s press conference on Wednesday, in which he threatened to bring protesters to Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur if the authorities failed to act against traders there for selling fake goods. Jamal had said failure of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism to act would see protesters descend on the area, where businesses were largely Chinese owned. “If (the ministry) does not act by Friday, if any chaos happens there, I will not be responsible. Those who go there will be as many as 5,000 people.” Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim yesterday said police would act against anyone who intended to disrupt public order in Petaling Street tomorrow. – September 25, 2015. Joke of the Day: Bersih can learn from peaceful ‘red shirt’ rally, Ahmad Maslan says

Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan urged the Bersih 4 organisers to learn from today's “Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu” that has been going on peacefully.

He said this when he went to inspect the gathering dubbed the 'red shirt' rally at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur this morning in his capacity as the Overseas Umno Club alumni chairman.

"The Bersih 4 gathering that day was defiled by some acts that we all know about. So I hope there will be no such acts during the rally today."

Ahmad said the organiser of the 'red shirt' rally will make sure the gathering, which has been issued a permit by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, proceeds peacefully.
"We have groups that will make sure no acts of provocation will take place. We have a group that will make sure nobody steps on any pictures of opposition leaders.

"We will also make sure no insults are hurled. We hope everyone will follow the rules.

"So if the rally today can proceed peacefully and calmly, I hope it will be a lesson to all parties," he said, making a reference to the Bersih 4 rally on August 29 and 30 that was organised by electoral reform group Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0).

The 'red shirt' rally today is reportedly organised to counter the Bersih 4 rally.

The organiser of the 'red shirt' rally has claimed that Bersih 4 was a racial gathering as most of the protesters were Chinese and some participants had stepped on the pictures of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang. – September 16, 2015.

NSD denies supporting rally

It says the buses are managed by third party bus operators and are only hired by the department on a contractual basis.
"PLKN stresses that the use of the buses for the rally is not our responsibility. We also did not approve any applications to use the bus for Himpunan Rakyat (Bersatu)," says the department.
Heat and haze take their toll
2.10pm: Masjid Negara - Participants start moving from Jalan Kinabalu to Padang Merbok while blowing their vuvuzelas.
Some opt to remain at the mosque, including a group of elderly participants who appear tired given the heat and haze.
Umno info chiefs joins rally because it’s ‘legal’
2pm: Padang Merbok - There are 1,500 participants at Padang Merbok. An announcement instructs them to collect their rice and curry lunch at a tent set up for the day.

Red shirts denied entry into Petaling Street
1.30pm: Petaling Street - Police stop a group of 200 red-clad protestors from entering Petaling Street.

Unable to enter, they march to Pasar Seni while chanting "Hidup Islam" (Long live Islam) and "Hidup Melayu" (Long live Malays), and then back to the Petaling Street entrance.
Haze in KL ‘moderate’
1.40pm: The haze problem appears not to be as serious as initially feared for the rally as the situation has improved since yesterday.
There is no monitor in the heart of Kuala Lumpur but both northern and southern KL records moderate readings on the air pollutant index.
Batu Muda, Kuala Lumpur sees a reading of 85 while Cheras, Kuala Lumpur sees a reading of 88.
This is in contrast to yesterday's reading for Kuala Lumpur which was in the unhealthy region.
A reading of 51-100 is considered moderate, 100-200 is unhealthy, 200-300 is very unhealthy while above 300 is considered very hazardous.

‘Show Chinese DAP that Malays are in power’
1.20pm: Masjid Negara - About 5,000 participants are gathered here.
"Malays are defenders of Islam so we need to rise," says a participant, who refuses to be identified.
On the other side of the mosque, Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Mohd Razlan Rafii addresses participants from Johor.
"We gather today to show the Chinese DAP that Malays are in power. The other day, they stomped on a picture of Malay leaders but I don't see any stomping today. We must not behave in such a way," he says.
He then urges participants to perform zohor (midday) prayers before moving to Padang Merbok.
