Aviation officials to check Thai ‘wreckage’ sighting
LANGKAWI: Malaysian aviation officials are to contact their Thai counterparts to verify a reported sighting of metal wreckage in southern Thailand. Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lia said the curved piece of metal found on the coast of southern Thailand has not been confirmed. “It is still speculation right now,” he said, Star Online reported.
Liow said the public should not share unverified news lest it “causes more pain to the victims’ family members”.
On Saturday, a local official said a piece of curved metal had washed ashore in Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Tanyapat Patthikongpan, head of Pak Phanang district, told Reuters that “villagers found the wreckage, measuring about 2m wide and 3m long”.
The find prompted speculation about the MAS airliner on flight MH370 which disappeared in 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
Last year a piece of the plane’s wing was discovered washed ashore on Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean and confirmed by scientists to be part of the MAS Boeing 777’s flaperon. The aircraft is believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.
