Kit Siang: No 1MDB report under ‘cari makan’ Hasan

KUALA LUMPUR: The people expect the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to “burn the midnight oil”, and conduct investigations into the 1MDB scandal with a great sense of urgency, putting aside all other work until it can complete investigations, said suspended Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang in a blog posting.

“The 1MDB scandal has already given Malaysia the international infamy of [being the] third ranking for the world’s ‘worst corruption scandals in 2015′.”

The DAP veteran fears an indefinite serial delay and postponement in the submission of the Auditor-General’s report and the PAC report on 1MDB to Parliament.

The Auditor-General, noted Lim, submitted the interim report on its audit of 1MDB to the PAC in July last year. “Its final report has now been deferred to February because of the refusal of 1MDB to cooperate in submitting documents requested by the Auditor-General.”

Lim, who is also DAP Parliamentary Leader, was wondering why the PAC under “Cari Makan” Chairman Hasan Arifin was taking its own sweet time, as if completely indifferent and unaware of the national and international interest in the early and swift outcome of its investigations into the 1MDB scandal.

The PAC should meet in an emergency meeting to speed up its work so that it can submit its report to Parliament in March, warned Lim. “If this cannot be done, the PAC should not continue to sit on the interim report on the 1MDB scandal by the Auditor-General, but table it in Parliament in March together with an interim PAC report.”

Lim was commenting on the announcement on Wednesday by Hasan that the PAC report on its investigations into the RM55 billion 1MDB scandal would not be ready for tabling in Parliament in the March/April meeting. “The majority of the people are not surprised at all.”

In fact, added Lim, he expects “cari makan” Hasan to even miss the following Parliamentary meeting from May 16 to 26. “That would mean the PAC report on the 1MDB scandal will be kicked to the end of the year, when Parliament meets for 25 days from 17 October to 24 November, 2016.”

Again, continued Lim, nobody will be very surprised if the net result on demanding full accountability on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s twin mega scandals by the end of the year concludes not very much differently from that last year.

“The Prime Minister disappeared from Parliament on the last day of the 25-day budget meeting although Ministers had proclaimed to the world that all the answers about his RM2.6 billion ‘donation’ scandal would be answered on 3 December 2015, the last day of the Parliamentary meeting.”

However, lamented Lim, there were absolutely no answers to the teeming questions about the scandal.
