Mukhriz ordered to leave Umno Supreme Council meet
Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir was ordered to leave the Umno Supreme Council meeting held this afternoon by the party's secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor.
Mukhriz said Tengku Adnan told council members that those who were not invited to this afternoon's meeting should leave.
“That instruction was aimed at me,” Mukhriz said before leaving the Datuk Onn Tower at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) at 4pm today.
Mukhriz is a council member as he is the party’s state liaison chief in Kedah. He had lost in the contest for one of the party’s vice-president posts in the 2013 party polls.
Mukhriz, who is also Kedah menteri besar, left in a hurry after speaking briefly to reporters.
Earlier, the embattled Mukhriz arrived at PWTC to loud cries of "hidup menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz" (long live Datuk Seri Mukhriz).
He was all smiles despite knowing this afternoon's meeting was to decide his fate as menteri besar.
On January 20, Kedah Umno division leaders held a press conference to announce a loss of confidence in Mukhriz's leadership, urging Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to make immediate changes.
It was led by deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.
It was reported that 19 of the 21 Barisan Nasional assemblymen from Kedah signed a statutory declaration asking for the change as Mukhriz refused to step down.
Najib was also believed to have obtained the green light for the change of leadership from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.
But Mukhriz on Friday said he was unaware of the change.
Earlier today protesters gathered peacefully in front of Bashah's office in Alor Star, amid speculation that the palace had given its consent for the swearing in of a new menteri besar on Monday. – January 29, 2016.
