Shahbudin: Najib meets with rebels on Mukhriz’s departure

KUALA LUMPUR: In his latest blog posting, a political analyst was left wondering when Prime Minister Najib Razak will ever meet with embattled Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir.

“Will Najib want to see Mukhriz after meeting with the 14 Kedah Umno division chiefs?

“What’s the use of Najib meeting with Mukhriz after he meets with the mutineers first and listens to those who want to kick out the Kedah Menteri Besar?”

Shahbudin Husin, the analyst, was commenting on reports that Najib will meet with the 14 Kedah Umno division chiefs, who recently announced a vote of no-confidence in Mukhriz. The meeting is taking place on Friday evening at Umno headquarters, even though there has been no news of him meeting with the Kedah Menteri Besar.

Najib’s meeting with the 14 rebels, said the analyst, can be taken as confirmation that the objective on Friday evening is to speed up Mukhriz’s removal. “In fact, it won’t be surprising at all if Najib ignores Mukhriz after this and does not meet with him at all.”

After all, noted Shahbudin, as soon as the current upheaval in Kedah erupted, everyone immediately pointed fingers at Najib as the man behind it.

This assumption was not only due to the fact that Najib seems to be at loggerheads with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who is the Menteri Besar’s father, but also because “the faces behind the vote of no-confidence in Kedah are all Najib loyalists”.

Experts in politics, said Shahbudin, will agree that the rebels would not dare, would not be so brave as to rock the boat in Kedah and create new trouble in Umno, if they did not get permission from Najib himself.

“By right, Najib should meet with Mukhriz first on the political ‘crisis’ in Kedah. After all, isn’t he still the Menteri Besar and Kedah Umno Liaison Committee Chief?

“Isn’t it normal protocol to first contact the Chief Minister and State Umno Liaison Committee Chief whenever an issue surfaces at state level, in order to gain more information on the situation?”

Again, said the analyst, Najib was not adhering to courtesy and tradition when organising the party and government.

Or, asked Shahbudin, are all these actions, Najib’s avoidance of Mukhriz included, just an attempt to put on a “show” and convince the skeptics that Mukhriz’s ousting was intended by the 14 Umno division chiefs and not Najib?

If it is just a show, no one is fooled. According to Shahbudin, “Mukhriz, given Najib’s scheduled meeting with the 14 mutineers, has clearly come to the end of the road.

“If nothing else, Najib’s meeting with the 14 Kedah Umno division chiefs is meant for the sole purpose of speeding up Mukhriz’s departure.”
