ALOR SETAR: After two weeks, Kedah political turmoil has finally ended after its Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir is confirmed to be replaced today.
According to a source close to Mukhriz, the new MB will be announced today.
Mukhriz is expected to hold a press conference at Wisma Darul Aman at 10am today after he was notified by the Kedah royal house that a new MB has been appointed.
The notice was issued by his press secretary, Mohd Fisol Jaafar at approximately 11.30pm last night but he remained tight-lipped about the agenda of the press conference.
Although no official announcement has been made at Press time, majority of Kedah assemblymen have indicated that if there was a change in the state’s administration, it would indirectly mean Mukhriz will be replaced.
It is learnt that the decision was made after the 21 Barisan Nasional assemblymen and 15 opposition members were summoned to have an audience with the Kedah Regency Council two days ago.
The political climate in Kedah heated up for the last two weeks when Mukhriz was placed under the spotlight after state Umno leaders led by Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah openly declared that they had lost confidence in Mukhriz’s administration as MB and state UMNO Liaison chief.
The crisis escalated when Ahmad Bashah along with a number of Kedah UMNO leaders held a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur, last Friday.
