RM2.6b to fight non-terrorist movement makes no sense

PETALING JAYA: Former Umno supreme council member Saifuddin Abdullah has questioned the logic behind Putrajaya’s justification for the RM2.6 billion found in Prime Minister Najib Razak’s personal bank accounts.

In a column in Sinar Harian today, Saifuddin, who is now in PKR, said the reason given that the Saudi royal family donated the cash to combat the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood did not hold water.

“The Muslim Brotherhood is not a terrorist organisation. It is an Islamic movement that champions Islam as a way of life. The core of its programme is preaching and education. Sometimes, they are involved in politics.

“The Brotherhood has been established in many Arab countries. Its leaders have written many books, for instance (Egyptian author) Syed Qutb who wrote ‘In the Shade of the Quran’.”

He also cited Yusuf Qardawi as another prominent figure linked to the organisation.

Saifuddin said the organisation (Muslim Brotherhood) was today a worldwide Islamic movement.

“What is the connection between the RM2.6 billion and the Muslim Brotherhood? It is merely the work of those who wish to write a new political script – that the Opposition and its supporters are influenced by the organisation (read: terrorists).

“Of course, PAS President Datuk Seri Hadi Awang is not included in this group, hence the reason Najib is getting close to him,” wrote Saifuddin.

He added that Muslim movements like Abim and Ikram could next become targets of those “writing the script”, as these movements were seen to be aligned to PKR and Amanah.

Saifuddin said Najib may have been “lawfully” cleared by Attorney-General Apandi Ali on the issue of the donation, but the premier is not yet off the hook “morally and politically”.
