Najib: Power only a tool for people’s benefit

KUALA SELANGOR, March 21 — Power is a tool to be wielded for the people’s benefit, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.

In his speech launching the Bumiputera Education Expedition here, he pointedly said he is not a man for grandstanding but will only carry out programmes that benefit the people.

“We are not chasing power. Power must be used as a tool, a tool to do something that is beneficial for Malaysians,” Najib told a crowd of thousands of people.

He also took a swipe at leaders from both sides of the political divide that signed a Citizens’ Declaration earlier this month seeking his resignation from office.

“I don’t sign a declaration on the stage alone, we do programmes that would benefit the people, benefit Malaysians,” he said.

One of the key leaders behind the declaration signed three weeks ago was former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has since become Najib’s biggest critic.

More than 45 individuals from both sides of the political divide, including civil society leaders, had signed the declaration.

The new programme launched by Najib today will see members of non-government organisations travelling to 52 parliamentary constituencies to identify underprivileged Bumiputera students and help them take advantage of tertiary education opportunities.

“One of the greatest satisfaction for me is to see someone from a poor family become successful,” he said.
