DAP's Tony Pua and Lim Kit Siang call on Najib Razak to clear air over latest allegations.
KUALA LUMPUR: Following the blocking of The Malaysian Insider, DAP’s Tony Pua has questioned if the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) is next after the American media outlet’s latest expose on 1MDB.
Commenting on the WSJ’s report alleging over USD 1 billion was deposited into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s accounts from 1MDB, Pua asked if WSJ would be blocked for allegedly breaking Malaysian laws.
“Given the climate of shutting down media, are they going to block the WSJ for allegedly breaking laws which no one is aware about.
“What is more important is for the prime minister to address the facts of the issue, as to whether the USD 1 billion or more was deposited into the account.”
The fierce 1MDB critic said Najib’s supporters would cry foul and claim the latest expose was part of a conspiracy against the Malaysian government.
He also questioned if Attorney-General Apandi Ali was aware of the other amounts deposited into Najib’s accounts.
He added that these allegations needed to be explained and if they were untrue, then Najib should sue WSJ in Malaysia and outside the country, including in Hong Kong and America.
Pua also said it was time for the AG to allow the MACC to receive the necessary legal assistance from other jurisdictions to uncover the facts of the case.
Meanwhile, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang called on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to look into WSJ’s latest expose.
He said the PAC should summon Najib, the former and current AGs, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and members of the now defunct special task force for the 1MDB probe to give a clear picture of what had happened.
“It has come back to square one. The foremost question is whether the money deposited into Najib’s account came from 1MDB,” he said, adding that Najib owed the people an explanation, whether through the PAC or in Parliament.
