The first day into campaigning, PAS candidate for Kuala
Kangsar, Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad, is boasting with confident that the battle
for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat is one that is only between her party
and the BN.
“For the people of Kuala Kangsar, it’s a choice between BN
and PAS only. I don't think Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) poses a big
challenge,” she said at a press conference held in Bukit Chandan, Kuala
Kangsar, today.
The contest, Najihatussalehah added, will see who can fare
better in gaining the voters’ attention.
She is also optimistic that PAS has the chance to win, while
admitting that BN has its own number of voters and PAS has its own hardcore
supporters as well.
She nevertheless admitted that having Amanah in the fray
would affect PAS in obtaining votes from the non-Malays.
Her campaign, therefore, would focus more on garnering their
support.
“We know that Amanah is with DAP and PKR in Pakatan Harapan
and they will attract Chinese voters.
“This is a challenge for PAS. Previously, PAS received votes
from the Chinese due to being in Pakatan Rakyat,” Najihatussalehah said.
Due to this, PAS will therefore make use of all its election
machinery, as well as its PAS Supporters’ Congress (DHPP), in meeting up with
the voters.
But PAS’ possible plus point in fielding her, is her ability
to speak Mandarin, which would ease her way in meeting with the Chinese communities.
“I admit that I'm not that fluent but I can converse (in
Mandarin) and with my experience as a doctor meeting with Chinese patients, I
think it's easier to get close to them,” said the Chinese-educated medical
doctor.
Apart from facing off against BN's Mastura Mohd Yazid, who
is defending her late husband's seat, the Kuala Kangsar by-election is a
four-cornered tussle involving Amanah's Ahmad Termizi Ramli and independent
candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.
Both the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar seats fell vacant
after incumbent MPs Noriah Kasnon and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad
perished in a helicopter crash during campaigning for the Sarawak state
election last month.
