Bersih 2.0 mulling to a peaceful rally for PM ouster

Bersih 2.0 is considering to organise a peaceful rally to demand for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation following the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) action to seize assets purchased with money allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.

“It is being considered,” the electoral reform group’s former chairperson, Ambiga Sreenevasan said at a press conference here today.

Ambiga added that the Cabinet ought to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the suit, noting that only one minister had responded to the DoJ’s actions over the US$3.5 billion allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.

She said the government cannot sit back and “pretend that nothing has happened” and had to act in a responsible manner.

“It has made our system of justice a laughing stock and that is a tragedy. They need to address it immediately.”

Also present were Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik. The former prime minister supported the call for the rally but lamented that Malaysians “were a timid lot”.
