BN are confident to win back Penang if snap poll are called, says Umno minister
Pakatan Harapan will lose Penang if it holds an early election now, an Umno Supreme Council member said today.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim added that Barisan Nasional has experience on its side while Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was facing two corruption charges.
“I think this time they will lose because they assume that power is everything. No,” he said when met at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre today after the Prime Minister’s Department’s Hari Raya open house today.
“Most importantly our election machinery is at the ready. What they want to do is up to them, but we are ready,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Rashid Hasnon and Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy both confirmed talks of a possible snap polls being discussed within DAP leadership on July 11 as reported.
Lim announced today that DAP will have further consultations with its Pakatan Harapan allies before deciding on whether to hold snap elections.
The proposed snap elections was to gauge the people’s support both for Pakatan Harapan and Lim’s leadership after the latter was charged with corruption on June 30.
Lim was charged with abuse of power and corruption at the Penang High Court last month over the alleged approval of a rezoning application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential and over his purchase of his RM2.8 million house from businesswoman Phang Li Koon at below market value of RM4.27 million.
There were calls for the CM (chief minister) to step down as or to take leave pending his court cases but DAP and Pakatan had voiced its full support for Lim to remain as chief minister, labelling the charges as a political motivated to end Lim’s political career.
There are 40 state seats in Penang, 19 are held by DAP, 10 by PKR, 1 by PAS and the remaining 10 by Barisan Nasional (BN).
