Najib is Innocent while Guan Eng are obviously charged
The opposition calling for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step down following the US Department Of Justice's (DOJ) crackdown on assets allegedly linked to 1MDB has proven the opposition's are double standards, Umno said.
Umno information chief Annuar Musa said this is because Najib is not at all implicated in the DOJ civil suits, whereas Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has been charged in a criminal court for alleged corruption.
"But (Lim) has refused to take leave or step down and is instead dragging the people down to save himself," Annuar said, referring to Lim's plans to hold snap elections in Penang.
"This double standard reflects on how their actions are inconsistent and lack integrity."
The DOJ on Wednesday filed civil suits to seize over US$1 billion in assets acquired with funds allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.
Najib is not named in the suits, but opponents claim the premier is the figure named "Malaysian Official 1" whom the DOJ alleges to have received US$731 million in siphoned 1MDB monies.
Pakatan Harapan has called on Najib to step down following the DOJ clampdown, threatening to lead the rakyat in "political action" if he doesn't.
Lim was slapped with two corruption charges over allegations of abusing his position as Penang chief minister for personal gain.
Lim is charged with approving the rezoning of a plot of land in Balik Pulau from agriculture to residential use, which the prosecutors said was done to benefit one of the landowners, businesswoman Phang Li Koon.
Lim chaired the state planning committee that approved the rezoning, which was later rejected by the Penang Island City Council.
Phang is the previous owner of the bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn, which Lim purchased for RM2.8 million, purportedly at below its market value.
Phang has also been charged together with Lim, with abetting him in purchasing the property at below market value, which is an offence in the Penal Code for a public official.
