PM calls for cooperation between people and the government to fight militant groups

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today advised the people to cooperate with the government and security forces to fight militant groups in the country.

He said they could notify the police, for example, if they came across any suspicious activity.

“We are in an era of globalisation. In a borderless world, whatever happens elsewhere can spread to our country, regardless of whether it is an economic or security matter.

“First and foremost, we must reject extremism and militancy. Use awareness, moderation as the basis,” he said in a live broadcast over Astro Awani from the Aidilfitri open house of the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers at the Seri Perdana Complex here.

Najib said the government constantly enhanced national security and undertook enforcement action to check activities of the IS militant group.

In an interview with Bernama News Channel (BNC) carried live as well, Najib suggested that all quarters help to enhance the people’s understanding of authentic Islam.

He said the recent terror attack in Madinah, committed by a small group of Muslims who did not understand the true Islam and killed innocent people, had tarnished the image of Islam.

“It was a huge mistake from the Islamic viewpoint. So, besides taking enforcement action, we have to enhance the people’s understanding of authentic Islam,” he said.

While being interviewed by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), the Prime Minister said all segments of society should be united in the fight against the terror threat against the country.

He said stepping up security by the authorities would come to nothing if there was no support from the people.

“But if the people are with the government in this matter, I believe we can maintain national security very well,” he said.

Najib also said that the government was committed to seeking ways to stepping up the government delivery process.

“The (government) agenda has yet to be completed. It takes time but it brings about significant reforms. For example, public transportation and construction of roads.

“The LRT extension (to Putra Heights) was launched recently and the MRT will be launched in December, and they are huge catalysts. They are game changers in national public transportation,” he said.

On the Aidilfitri open house, Najib said it was a unique feature of the country and should be retained.

About 70,000 people attended the open house, many arriving as early as 9am to celebrate Aidilfitri with the nation’s leaders.
