Penang DAP’s campaign to collect the RM1 million paid as
bail for Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has achieved its target – in less than 24
hours.
The money collected was to restore party funds used to bail
out Lim from court, after he claimed trial for two graft charges yesterday.
State DAP Chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the party had received
RM1,009,000 by 2pm and was thankful for the generous donations received from
the public.
“In less than 24 hours, we hit the target. From 6pm
yesterday till 2pm today, we have been receiving (an average of) RM51,000 per
hour.
“We would like to thank Malaysians for parting with their
hard-earned money. We thank you for your sacrifice.
“We would like to announce that the donation campaign has
been stopped as we have hit our target,” he told reporters at the Penang DAP
headquarters in Rangoon Road here today.
Yesterday, Penang DAP Vice-Chariman Zairil Khir Johari
launched a RM10 campaign to restore funds into party coffers, after spending
RM1 million to post Lim’s bail.
Chow explained that RM890,000 was taken out from Penang
DAP’s accounts while the remaining RM110,00 came from the central DAP
headquarters.
