Police report succeeded in averting the plot attempt, claims Umno Youth deputy chief
Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun was adamant that his police report against three former senior civil servants had succeeded in averting a purported attempt to topple the government, despite police stopping investigations on the case.
Khairul Azwan said something bad could have happened to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) if he did not file the police report last month.
“We feel blessed and happy that we successfully prevented an attempt to topple Datuk Seri Najib Razak... if there was no action on my part, something unfortunate may have happened,” he told a press conference here.
“I take this as a success in stopping an attempt. Maybe the attempt failed because I took action.”
When asked about Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s announcement yesterday that investigations on Khairul Azwan’s report would cease because it was based on hearsay, the Umno Youth leader insisted that his accusations were not based on hearsay and assumptions.
“Those were not assumptions,” he said.
However, he said he has reached a “Mexican standoff” when it comes to his next course of action after the police dismissed his report.
Khalid said yesterday that no action would be taken against Khairul Azwan for lodging a report based on hearsay.
Last month, Khairul Azwan accused former Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar, former Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail and former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed of conspiring with foreign agencies to depose Najib.
In his police report lodged at the Dang Wangi police station, he reportedly claimed that the three provided confidential information to agencies such as the US Federal Bureau of Investigation.
