PKR today launched an online petition to seek a royal pardon for former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
In announcing this, PKR Vice-President Nurul Izzah Anwar said she was hoping to get as “many people as possible to sign the petition”.
“We must ensure that when the time comes, we are able to hand over the petition to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong so he can pardon Anwar,” she told a crowd outside the Federal Court here.
Nurul Izzah urged the people to not give up hope in their bid to free Anwar, saying that this was a test from God.
Nurul Izzah praised the supporters for their unwavering support for the former deputy prime minister over the past 18 years, adding that without such support it would be impossible to free him.
The former Permatang Pauh lawmaker was at the apex court today seeking to set aside his conviction for sodomising his former aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
He is currently serving a five-year jail term after the same court upheld his sodomy conviction on Feb 10 last year.
Earlier today, Anwar’s lawyer made an application to recuse the panel as it was made up of the same judges who had rejected an application on May 24 to call former Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Ramli Yusof to give additional evidence in Anwar’s case.
