Umno grassroots to join Bersih 5.0 rally, targets Guan Eng, Azmin to quit
Opposition state leaders Lim Guan Eng and Azmin Ali will be the focus of an anti-corruption rally planned by Umno grassroots members on the same day as the Bersih 5 rally next month.
The Umno group, Gerakan Akar Umbi Umno Malaysia, said its rally, called Himpunan Merah Rakyat Bersatu Tolak Rasuah, would be more focused on demanding the resignations of Lim as chief minister of Penang and Azmin as menteri besar of Selangor.
Lim, who is secretary-general of the DAP, faces two charges of corruption relating to his purchase of a RM2.8 million bungalow in Penang and a land conversion deal said to be related. His trial begins in December.
“Also to be highlighted at our rally are the issue of the bumiputera settlement which was demolished in Penang, the Selangor water issue, demolition of bumiputera shops (stalls), and wrongdoings committed by former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad,” said GAUM chairman Zulkarnain Mahdar.
The Bersih 5 rally is to seek the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak and for institutional reforms.
Zulkarnain said he expected 3,000 to attend the rally, to be held together with the anti-Bersih Red Shirts movement. He hoped to be able to march peacefully together with Bersih participants at a few locations before moving on to Dataran Merdeka.
