Utusan settle libel suit with regret
Utusan Malaysia has settled a libel suit brought against it by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The newspaper's lawyer, Wan Azmir Wan Majid read out a statement of regret on behalf of his client in open court on Wednesday as part of the terms of the settlement.
The consent order was recorded by High Court judge Justice Noraini Abdul Rahman.
Anwar’s suit against Utusan Melayu and TV3 was originally set to go for trial over allegations linking the PKR leader to the intrusion by an armed Sulu group in Lahad Datu in 2013.
In his suit filed on March 8, 2013, Anwar had named Utusan Melayu, its group editor-in-chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Ishak, TV3, its group managing editor Datuk Shahruddin Abdul Latif and Buletin Utama news editor Ing Boon Seng as defendants.
The PKR leader, who had sought RM100mil in damages from the parties, said the statements had implied that he was a threat to national security, a traitor and involved in terrorism.
In the statement of defence filed on April 12 2013, Utusan Melayu had asked the court to dismiss the suit with costs saying that it was wrong in law.
It said that it has taken reasonable care in the publication of an article in its newspaper Utusan Malaysia on March 2, 2013 and that it was not defamatory of Anwar.
