Dr M calls Kunan a crook over Umno-themed school event

ALOR STAR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad today called Tengku Adnan Mansor a “crook”, claiming the Federal Territories minister lied over an Umno-themed event at a primary school in Putrajaya recently.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said this in response to Tengku Adnan’s claim that the activity in the school, where students were seen singing the Umno song as well as waving the Umno flag, was to instill a sense of patriotism in the students.

“This is the biggest lie by a crook. Ordinary people don’t do such things.

“They know that our national flag is the Jalur Gemilang. They acknowledged it before but now they want the Umno flag as the national flag,” Mahathir said at a press conference here today after the opening of the national Parti Amanah Negara convention.

Tengku Adnan, or Ku Nan as he is popularly known, had yesterday defended the actions of the primary school in making students participate in the Umno-themed event, saying it had been a practice there for the last 10 years.

He had said that schoolchildren at SK Putrajaya Presint 14 (1) were encouraged to wave Umno flags and sing the party song so as to instil a sense of patriotism in them.

On Oct 3, pupils and teachers of the school took part in a “class decoration and performance” competition with the theme “Umno and independence #Negaraku”. The event was officiated by Tengku Adnan, who is also Putrajaya MP.

During the function, Umno flags were draped all over the primary school.

Malaysiakini reported that at one point a banner with the words “Hidup Umno, Hidup Melayu. Dulu, Kini dan Selamanya” (“Long Live Umno, Long Live Malays. Before, Now and Forever”) appeared on stage.-FMT NEWS-
