A large number of DAP members and supporters gathered
outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here in a
show of support for Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
The crowd of supporters that started arriving in small
groups at 7.30pm has now swelled to over 200.
They started chanting “Bebas Guan Eng” at 9pm while some
carried handwritten placards calling for Lim’s release.
All Penang Pakatan Harapan state assemblymen and state
executive councillors were present.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat leader Chua Tian Chang and Amanah’s
Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa also turned up to lend their support.
Lim was arrested at his office in Komtar earlier today and
brought to the MACC headquarters along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.
He is still being held inside the MACC premises with his
counsels, RSN Rayer and Ramkarpal Singh, accompanying him.
Lim is expected to be charged in the Sessions Court here
tomorrow on two charges, one under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption
Commission Act and another under Section 165 of the Penal Code.
The first charge involved rezoning approval of Magnificent
Emblem’s application to convert agricultural land to residential purpose while
the second charge was over Lim’s house purchase allegedly at below market
value.
There was currently no charge over the sale of the Taman
Manggis land.
Phang Li Koon, who sold the house to Lim, and a director of
Magnificent Emblem, was also arrested today and expected to be charged
tomorrow.
