PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail described
today that, her deputy Datuk Seri Azmin Ali's arrival at the nomination centre in the
Sungai Besar by-election as a blessing in disguise.
Earlier, Dr Wan Azizah had said that Azmin, who is Selangor
mentri besar, need not attend Pakatan Harapan’s campaigning events as he would
need to safeguard the interests of PAS, which is also contesting against
Pakatan Harapan component party Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), as
representatives from the Islamist party are part of the Selangor state
government.
“Yes, earlier I said that, but now ‘Alhamdullilah’, he is
here,” she told reporters, using the Arabic expression of relief, meaning
“Praise God”.
Azmin said he fully supported Amanah candidate Azhar Shukur
and has asked the PKR machinery to assist the latter during campaigning in the
Selangor federal constituency.
“But as the Selangor Mentri Besar, I will have to accompany
the Sultan almost every night once Ramadan period starts for events.
“Therefore, I will have to juggle my schedule to find time
to come down here and Kuala Kangsar,” Azmin said.
Azmin also wished PAS candidate Dr Rani Osman well,
describing him as a good person and leader who has always supported the state
government’s policies.
Azmin was previously absent at Pakatan Harapan programmes
prior to nomination day today.
Talks were rife that he had attempted to persuade PAS to
give in to Pakatan Harapan in either the Sungai Besar or Kuala Kangsar
by-elections.
When negotiations failed, Azmin did not show up at the
announcements of candidates in both parliamentary by-elections.
The June 18 Sungai Besar by-election will see a
three-cornered fight between Rani, Azhar and Barisan Nasional's Budiman Mohd
Zohdi.
