EC chief must step down, says Pakatan Harapan

Pakatan Harapan has called for the resignation of Election Commission chief Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.

DAP vice-chairman Tan Kok Wai said since the EC is an important institution that has to be seen to be fair and impartial, it has failed.

"It (EC) must prove that it is free from any political influence. They can draw and change the boundaries provided they are fair. However, the EC has failed in this principle.

"Therefore, the chief must step down immediately as the good name of the EC has been tarnished," he said.

Tan also questioned whether Mohd Hashim is able to lead the EC in the next general election as the commission is entrusted to monitor and control the election process.

Ten Federal Territories Opposition leaders submitted objections on the proposed electoral redelineation exercise to Kuala Lumpur EC deputy director Nor Barna Yendo Skaaidih at the commission's Kuala Lumpur office Tuesday.

Among those who submitted objections were PKR vice-president and Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, Parti Amanah Negara election director Dr Hatta Ramli, DAP's Batu MP Tian Chua, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, Tumpat MP and PKR coordinator for Bandar Tun Razak Dr Kamaruddin Jaafar and PKR's Wangsa Maju MP Datuk Dr Tan Kee Kwong.

Nurul Izzah said the Opposition will use every democratic and institutional mechanism to object to the redelineation exercise.

"Will our voices be heard or buried by the EC? What is compulsory right now is not just (Mohd Hashim's) resignation but a stop to the process until a new independent body is formed to conduct the redelineation exercise," she said.

Dr Hatta said the EC has missed the opportunity to show that it is fair with the gerrymandering and redelineation exercise.
