Siti Kasim gives statement to police for showing middle finger

Lawyer and activist Siti Kasim has given her statement to police for showing the middle finger at a forum on PAS' Syariah Bill last month.

She entered the Shah Alam police district headquarters with four lawyers at about 8.30pm on Monday to have her statement recorded.

"The police were very, very nice. I love the police, they were so nice to me. They were very cooperative and very helpful as well. I really appreciate the police being professional with us," Siti said after exiting the station at about 10pm.

She is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for outraging the modesty of a person.

Siti said she did not feel guilty over the act.

"To me, it is an appropriate reaction to at that time. It was out of my frustration. It was a spontaneous reaction of my frustration with their heckling," she said.

Siti showed the middle finger to alleged hecklers who harassed her for openly opposing PAS' Private Member's Bill on hudud at a forum on Sept 5 entitled Pindaan Akta 355: Antara Realiti Dan Persepsi (Bill 355 Amendment: Between Reality and Perception).

The Bill is aimed at expanding the powers of the Syariah Court.

It seeks to empower the courts to enforce punishments - except for the death penalty - as provided for under Syariah laws for Islamic offences listed under state jurisdiction in the Federal Constitution.
