Zahid's daughter: Bersih 4 demo 'stupid', better for supporters to join the army

PETALING JAYA: The daughter of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has slammed Bersih 4 supporters for taking it to the streets in the name of defending the country.

In a series of rants on Facebook Monday, Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid described the protest as a kerja bodoh (stupid work), and that it was better for supporters to join the army.

"If you really want to defend the country, go and join the army, and patrol the borders.

"Go and join Ops Pasir (military patrol in east coast waters of Sabah), you can experience all kinds of operations.

"Don't think that just because you're wearing yellow and that you got to be on papers and TV, you can be proud.

"You think you are so brave opposing like that? I have a similar experience in 1998, I was so stupid back then because I just wanted to go to the streets and have fun.

"At that time, I called for (former prime minister) Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) to step down. I believe many were like me before," she said.

Nurulhidayah was referring to the “reformasi” era in 1998, when former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sacked from the cabinet.

Her father, seen an ally of Anwar at that time, was also arrested and held in prison under the Internal Security Act after speaking out against Dr Mahathir.

Nurulhidayah said street protests were not relevant today, "as the world watches us descent into chaos."

"I will not say much about this. My opinion - it is a FOOLISH WORK, or in simpler term, STUPID WORK," she said.

Her Facebook posts have since gone viral on social media.

Dr Mahathir: Tell your MPs to vote him out

KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has appealed for the people to pressure their MPs to remove prime minister Najib Razak from office through a confidence vote in Parliament.

“Tell them if you don’t support the no-confidence motion, we will not elect you as our MP,” Dr Mahathir said while on a brief visit to show support for the Bersih protesters occupying the streets of central Kuala Lumpur to demand Najib’s resignation.

“It is now the people’s duty to ensure that this country is governed without corruption,” he said. “A leader who says cash is king, is a corrupt leader, you shouldn’t support him”, he said in a reference to a remark that Najib was purported to have made about obtaining political support.

Dr Mahathir acknowledged that he had been involved in behind-the-scenes moves to obtain a majority for a confidence motion against the prime minister. “Yes I’m asking them already,” he said.

“I told them not to be influenced by money and Najib.”

Dr Mahathir, who said he came to show support to the people at the Bersih rally, urged them to put pressure on their MPs. He said that Najib was not likely to meet the protesters’ demand that he resign, and urged the protesters to persist.

“You cannot win a war with a single battle,” he said in reference to the street protests. “You have to persist and tell all your MPs please don’t support Najib, please support the no-confidence motion. We
want a big majority. That is what everyone should do.”

By parliamentary conventions, a government would fall once it no longer enjoyed the confidence of a majority of the Dewan Rakyat. Dr Mahathir said once the Najib government fell, the Barisan Nasional would continue to be in power because the party still had a parliamentary majority.

Asked if the people would need to wait until the next general election to change the government, Dr
Mahathir said he hoped not.

“It depends on the people,” he said. “People are suffering now, cost of living has gone up … everyone is in a bad shape.”

Zam: Dr M feels Najib more dangerous than DAP

Former information minister Zainuddin Maidin has solved the puzzle behind Dr Mahathir Mohamad's about turn on street demonstrations by making a double appearance at Bersih 4.

"Why was Tun (Mahathir's honorific title) present at the 'Bersih Cina (Chinese) gathering? It is because Tun feels that (Prime Minister) Najib (Abdul Razak) is more dangerous than DAP.

"Is this not what the Malays are thinking as well?" he tweeted.

"It is clear Tun's aim is whatever the cause Najib must go. That is why he was present at Bersih. He (Mahathir) wants Najib to go because he loves Umno," he added.

Zainuddin also noted that Mahathir still has credibility and his presence at Bersih 4 must be considered with regard to what impact it would have on Najib's leadership in the eyes of the world.

Mahathir and his wife Dr Siti Hasmah Ali rode on the KTM Komuter train to the city and held a press conference near Central Market yesterday evening.

The former premier said he supported the people but not Bersih.

Mahathir also said that he did not care for Bersih's demands, and only wanted Najib to resign.

Yesterday, the couple made a brief visit to Dataran Merdeka, where thousands of protesters were gathered.

Meanwhile, in his earlier tweets, Zainuddin once again raised the issue of Bersih 4's racial composition.

"Isolation of Malays makes Bersih 4 look like Chinese solid unity. Proven without PAS, DAP just a Chinese party like Umno without MCA, (is just a Malay party).

"Malaysian Malaysia pushed Malay to unite and move with drastic action. May 13 was the catalyst. Bersih 4 pushing the Malays again. DAP forgets," said the former Utusan Malaysia editor-in-chief.

The lack of Malay participation and the overwhelming presence of Chinese Malaysians had raised concerns and various speculations.

However, today witnessed a greater number of Malay participa

Buddhist, Muslim rally goers bed down at church

Many Bersih 4 participants, including Buddhists and even Muslims, had no hesitation in taking up the Catholic church's offer of rest and refuge, with some 200 spending the night at the St John's Cathedral, in Jalan Bukit Nanas.
They included the young and the old, Christians and non-Christians alike who were relieved to have a shower and space to put their sleeping bags and mats to lie down.
Among them was a company of three young boys in their teens, who looked energetic late last night after having their shower in the church grounds.
They then walked around the church compound looking for a suitable place to set up their sleeping bags.
St John's also set up 40 mobile toilets on its grounds for rally goers to use.
"We gave those who camped here all the food and water we had left.
"And it was a mixed crowd, the Buddhist, the Muslims and many more," said a church worker.
There were also rally participants who spent the night at St Anthony's Church in Jalan Pudu but none at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Brickfields, as it was too far away from Dataran Merdeka.
However, it had been one of the meeting points in Brickfields yesterday prior to the march to Dataran Merdeka.
Among those who slept over at the church were Koon Li Man and Kuah Peik Khee, who were “guided by the light to the church” – the lights at the KL Tower, that is.
Koon said that she was told by her newfound friend Kuah, whom she had just met at the rally yesterday, that there were toilets “up on that hill”.
"We were then drawn by the lights and the toilet and ended up here, and only after a while, I realised this was the church offering shelter which was reported about by news sites.
"This is my first time in a church," she said, laughing heartily.
Kuah and Koon were then assigned their sleeping spots at “parking bays” 149 and 150 and spent the night “gazing at the sky and moon”, after being fed a dinner of bread, water and oranges.

"It has been quite an experience, waking up to the church bells ringing and the lights at KL Tower coming on at the same time at 6am, it was quite magical.
"And then the prayers started in the church and they started singing and it was very peaceful," said Koon.
Kuah also described her first time in church as a peaceful experience and the best possible place to have put up the night given the convenience of being able to have a bath, eat and use the washrooms.
She added that there were also Muslims who slept over, adding that they slept in the “parking bays” across from her and appeared to be “a little shy”.
They left in the morning.
Meanwhile Koon and Kuah, both Buddhists, single and aged 30, have found friendship in each other and now understand the meaning of finding “shelter in the church”. – August 30, 2015.

Bersih 4.0 tiada sambutan, hanya 22,000 sertai – Berita Harian

Hahaha,” tulis pengguna Facebook Izzudin Ismail.

Tak Banyak Melayu tak sertai Bersih 4.0 tak bermakna sokong Najib

Red t-shirt group calls Bersih 4 ‘stupid’, pledges a million people at their own gathering

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30, 2015:

The anti-Bersih red t-shirt group has branded the Bersih 4 gathering as “stupid” and said that it will respond with the participation of a million people in their own gathering this October.

The group, consisting of a coalition of Malay non-government organisations led by Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos, said that unlike Bersih 4, which was a “waste of people’s time” and had “no point whatsoever”, their gathering will serve its goal of showing the nation that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak still has the majority of public support.

“At the end of the day, even after camping in the city for 34 hours, Datuk Seri Najib will still remain as the Prime Minister.

“We on the other hand will achieve our objective, so it will not be a waste of anyone’s time if they come and join us.

“If the Opposition can get their people to join Bersih 4, then we see nothing wrong in getting all the Umno people and supporters to join our gathering planned for this Oct 10 in Bukit Bunting,” said Jamal.

He expressed confidence in obtaining a green light from the authorities as, according to Jamal, although Bersih 4 was declared illegal, it still managed to go on without police interference.

“We have been very obedient and have followed instructions by police who asked for us not to participate in Bersih 4. So we believe they will be very cooperative with us.”

The Anti-Bersih group had made headlines and became a viral sensation recently due to a video depicting several of their men beating each other up as part of their self-defence training should any violence take place during Bersih 4 gathering this weekend.

Mahathir: I don't care about Bersih's demands, I am here for Najib's resignations

I don't care about Bersih's demands, I am here for Najib's resignations," says Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathir, who has contradicted DPM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's earlier claim that the former PM has only spent six minutes in his flash visit yesterday and is hence of little significance, ends his press conference expressing unequivocal support for the rally.

As he prepares to leave after his press conference, Mahathir tells reporters that he is not planning to stay on with Bersih 4 protesters at Dataran Merdeka who are remaining until midnight.

"No, no, I think I have shown my stand here that I support this demonstration against the government.

"My spirit is with you all," says the 90-year-old former premier.

Still at his press conference, Mahathir is asked about Prime Minister Najib Razak's remark that participants of the Bersih 4 do not love the country.

Mahathir replies to the contrary, saying, "He is the one who doesn't love the country. We gave him power to become prime minister, what does he do?"

"He is using (people's) money," adds Mahathir.

Mahathir is asked why he is now supporting street demonstrations against the government when he had cracked down on them as prime minister.

The former prime minister replies, "If the government no longer cares about the law, then people have to resort to demonstrations".

Mahathir adds that this is the "last option".

"Look at Marcos, he was ruling the Phillippines and they (the people) had to overthrow him," he says.

Former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad speaking at a press conference at a restaurant, says he is not supporting Bersih specifically but the rakyat.

"I support the rakyat, not Bersih. Bersih is also (made up) of the rakyat, they also dislike Najib," he says.

He adds that claims he was pro-Bersih was to smear his name.

Mahathir admits this is the first time he is joining a street protest like Bersih 4.

"This is the first time like this," he says.

Jangan kerana seekor nyamuk, habis kelambu dibakar.

There are now about 50,000 participants attending Bersih 4 although is raining

Rain fails to extinguish protesters' spirit
3.35PM: Dataran Merdeka - It has started raining, and while some are seeking shelter, others refuse to budge. They continue to cheer and chant 'Najib Undur' and 'Hidup Rakyat'.

Crowd swells to 50k
3.00pm - Dataran Merdeka - There are now about 50,000 participants attending Bersih 4 despite the heat and haze.
Based on an aerial survey, the largest concentration of the crowd is at the intersection of Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Raja, which is as close as the participants can get to Dataran Merdeka without running afoul of the police or rally marshals.

Of the estimated 50,000, about 10,000 are seen thronging the stretch of Jalan Tun Perak leading from the Masjid Jamek LRT station and Dataran Merdeka.
Substantial numbers of Bersih protesters are also spotted along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman near its intersection to Jalan Tun Perak, and at the opposite side of Dataran Merdaka at the intersection of Leboh Pasar Besar and Jalan Hang Kasturi.

'We fear not oppressive laws'
2.30pm: Jalan Tun Perak - As the Bersih programme continues after a two-hour break, the over 30,000-strong crowd continues listening to speeches and watching street performances under the haze-steeped sky.
Addressing to the crowd, Bersih committee member New Sin Yew jokes that all the protestors are "criminals" as the government has banned yellow Bersih T-shirts as well as the rally.
"No matter what the government does, we are all here.
"We are not afraid of oppressive laws. We have our rights under the federal constitution," he says to the crowd's cheers.
Some volunteers are trying to control the noise levels by holding up "No vuvuzelas" signs, but most of the crowd ignores it and continues the din of trumpet sounds.
