Ex-London mayor upends race for UK prime minister by quitting

Former London mayor Boris Johnson, runaway bookmakers' favourite to become Britain's prime minister, abruptly pulled out of the race on Thursday in a shock announcement less than a week after leading the campaign to pull the country out of the EU.

Johnson's announcement, to audible gasps from a roomful of journalists and supporters, was the biggest political surprise since Prime Minister David Cameron quit on Friday, the morning after losing the referendum on British membership in the bloc.

Johnson's withdrawal makes Theresa May, the interior minister who backed remaining in the EU, the new favourite to succeed Cameron.

She announced her own candidacy earlier on Thursday, promising to deliver the EU withdrawal voters had demanded, despite having campaigned for the other side.

"Brexit means Brexit," she told a news conference.

"The campaign was fought, the vote was held, turnout was high and the public gave their verdict. There must be no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it through the back door and no second referendum."

Johnson, whose support of the Leave cause was widely seen as delivering its victory, saw his bid suddenly crumble after his Brexit campaign ally, Justice Secretary Michael Gove, withdrew his backing and announced his own leadership bid.

"I must tell you, my friends, you who have waited faithfully for the punchline of this speech, that having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me," Johnson said at the news conference in a London luxury hotel.

Supporters in parliament, who had gathered expecting to hear him formally announce his candidacy, were left stunned.

Gove, a close friend of Cameron's despite differences with the prime minister over Europe, had previously said he would back Johnson. But in an article in the Spectator magazine on Thursday, Gove wrote that he had come "reluctantly, to the conclusion that Boris cannot provide the leadership or build the team for the task ahead".

Conservative lawmakers said Johnson may have been undone by supporters of Cameron exacting revenge for his decision to defy the prime minister and back the Leave campaign.

"He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword," said one lawmaker, describing internal party conflict on condition of anonymity. The lawmaker told Reuters that Johnson had realised his bid would fail after lawmakers defected from his campaign overnight.

Johnson became the latest political casualty of a civil war in the ruling party unleashed by Cameron's decision to hold the referendum on membership in the EU, an issue that divided the Conservatives for decades and now divides the country.

JOKEY MANNER

Johnson, known for a jokey public persona and a mop of unkempt blonde hair, became a popular national figure during eight years as London mayor, and used his charm to aid the Leave cause after deciding only late in the day to push for Brexit.

Several leading Conservatives questioned whether Johnson had the gravitas to run tough talks to mend the broken relationship with the EU and drive the country's future on the global stage.

In an article in the Times newspaper, May took aim at Johnson's persona by saying government was not "a game".

She also appealed to the working classes, many of whom voted to leave the EU in protest at an elite who, they say, failed to cushion their lives from increasing competition.

One senior Conservative lawmaker, Crispin Blunt, said Gove had probably withdrawn his support because Johnson refused to promise him a job.

Britain's new prime minister faces a huge task to unite the party and country, and persuade the EU to offer some kind of deal -- balancing the desire expressed by voters to reduce immigration with London's hope to maintain access to EU markets.

In the week since the referendum, Johnson had published a newspaper column promising curbs on immigration and continued access to the European common market, a position European officials say is untenable.

Conservative Party lawmakers will narrow a field of five leadership candidates down to two, and party members will then vote on which of them will become party leader and presumptive prime minister.

In addition to May and Gove, the candidates are Stephen Crabb, the cabinet minister responsible for pensions, Liam Fox, a right-wing former defence secretary, and Andrea Leadsom, a minister in the energy department.

Aware of the uncertainty in Britain, the party has said it is moving as quickly as it can to replace its leader and would do so by Sept. 9.

The main opposition Labour Party also faces a potential leadership battle, with lawmakers having voted no confidence in left-wing party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who refuses to step down.

The vacuum at the top of both major political parties has added to the political uncertainty at a time when Britain faces its biggest constitutional change since the dissolution of its empire in the decades after World War Two.

World’s biggest uncut diamond fails to sell at auction

A model shows off the 1109-carat ‘Lesedi La Rona’, rough diamond during a media event at Sotheby’s in London Britain June 14, 2016. — Reuters
The world’s largest uncut diamond failed to sell at auction in London yesterday after the bids fell short of the reserve price.

The Lesedi La Rona, a 1,109-carat, tennis ball-sized gem found in Botswana, had been predicted to sell for over US$70 million (RM281 million).

But the Sotheby’s auctioneer failed to persuade bidders to go above US$61 million for the jewel, which was discovered in 2015 by the Lucara Diamond Corp.

“Though widely admired in the months preceding this evening’s auction, and despite having seen bidding in the salesroom, the Lesedi la Rona failed to reach its reserve price and consequently did not find a buyer tonight,” Sotheby’s said in a later statement.

Sotheby’s chairman of jewellery David Bennett had called the diamond “the find of a lifetime.”

“No rough even remotely of this scale has ever been offered before at public auction,” Bennett said ahead of the auction.

Precious stones have been fetching ever-higher prices at auction lately, as the world’s ultra-rich invest in hard assets as a safeguard against stock market volatility.

Reacting to the failed sale, Tobias Kormind of 77 Diamonds online retailer said the bullish gem market “may have reached a tipping point and demand for large rare stones might just be saturated”.

Alternatively, he said, “the market instability with Brexit may have just caused this to be a case of bad luck or bad timing.”

Lesedi La Rona means “our light” in Botswana’s Tswana language. It could be cut into smaller gems for jewellery or left whole in a private collection.

On the same day as the stone was discovered, another 830-carat diamond was found in Botswana, the third-largest in the world, William Lamb, Lucara’s president and chief executive, told AFP.

The record for the biggest diamond in the world is still held by the “Cullinan Diamond”, a legendary gem found in South Africa in 1905 boasting 3,016.75 carats.

The Cullinan Diamond was cut into nine diamonds for the British crown jewels.

They include the Cullinan I in the Queen’s Sceptre and the Cullinan II, which is lodged in the crown that the British monarch wears to the opening of parliament.

A blue diamond from the same South African mine sold for over £25 million (RM134 million) in New York this month.

Stay put as Chief Minister, Penang DAP tells Guan Eng

There is no need for Lim Guan Eng to step down as Penang Chief Minister as the corruption charge is merely a form of political persecution, Exco member Chow Kon Yeow said.

The state DAP chairman explained that despite the two charges levelled at its secretary-general, the Penang DAP committee found Lim to be innocent.

“For that reason, the state DAP committee decided that there is no necessity for Lim to resign as Penang CM or to take leave from his responsibilities as the state’s chief executive.

“We would like to assure Penangites that business in the state government would be as usual and would not be affected by the corruption charge,” Chow said at a press conference.

He also said an emergency meeting for the Central Executive Committee would be convened tomorrow at DAP’s headquarters Kuala Lumpur at 11am.

Chow, however, did not elaborate why the meeting would take place, but said it would be on Lim’s charges.

Earlier this morning, Lim and his former landlord, Phang Li Khoon, were in the dock for their alleged involvement in rezoning an agricultural land and purchase of a below-market-price bungalow at Pinhorn Road. Both pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.

Meanwhile, at the same press conference, Penang DAP Vice-Chairman Zairil Khir Johari said a special fundraiser to collect funds to pay Lim’s bail was launched.

Zairil said the committee found Lim’s bail to be “excessive” and DAP supporters felt the same way.

“We have been asked by many who wanted to contribute towards Lim’s bail.

“By right, a bail amount should be set so that the person does not abscond from a court hearing, but this is too much. And we all know Lim does not run away,” the Bukit Bendera lawmaker added.

Zairil called on supporters to donate to the fund by banking in to their Maybank account: DAP Penang 5070 1301 4596.

Chow explained that Lim’s bail was posted using money from Penang DAP’s own funds, topped up by the DAP headquarters.

“We only have RM890,000 balance in our account. So the national treasurer topped up with another RM110,000.

“From the donations, we can pay the DAP HQ the balance and restore our accounts,” Chow said.

The woman who always silently remain behind the man

Six decades after their marriage, the two doctors, who are now in their 90s, continue to remain inseparable, a bond which has withstood numerous political trials and tribulations.

Many consider the soft-spoken Dr Siti Hasmah Ali as the wind beneath former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's wings. But the latter was no dove.

And even now, he is attempting to sink his talons into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, without much success.

In an interview with the media, Siti Hasmah revealed her emotions over the latest battle in which her husband is embroiled in.

The mother of seven confessed to feeling hurt when witnessing what Najib is doing to her husband.

However, she said nothing can be done about this except leaving the matter in the hands of Allah because the prime minister is too powerful.

"We can't do anything, they are too powerful. Leave it to Allah, perhaps there is a blessing in disguise.

"I know my husband is also disappointed and sad... Never mind, that person is too powerful, we cannot do anything," she was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

Siti Hasmah also revealed that she conceals her hurt from Mahathir.

"As Mahathir's wife, I admit the attacks and their actions against him have an impact (on her). But I do not show it, I don't want to compound his worries.

"So I choose to be with him all the time and respect his struggle which has yet to end. Sometimes, I feel sorry for him due to the way he is being treated," she added.

Describing Najib's action as "improper", Siti Hasmah said this was especially so since their respective families were close.

"We were close. Najib's father, Tun (Abdul) Razak, studied in the same school as my brother... So we have known each other for a long time.

"I was close friends with Tun Suhailah and Tun Rahah as well," she added.

Tun Suhailah Mohammad Noah is the mother of Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and the sister of Tun Rahah, who is Najib's mother.

Meanwhile, Siti Hasmah said she was most saddened when Mahathir relinquished his post as Proton Holdings adviser due to the sentimental attachments with the firm, which is the brainchild of her husband.

Die standing than live on bended knees, Guan Eng exclaimed

A defiant Lim Guan Eng promised today to put up a good fight to protect Penang’s image after he was charged with corruption over his house purchase last year, adding that no amount of humiliation would succeed in bringing him to his knees.

The Penang chief minister in a statement shortly after he was granted bail by the Penang High Court also maintained that he was innocent of the charges and that the government he heads in the northern state is free from power abuse and corruption.

He blamed Barisan Nasional (BN) for the charges, also questioning the federal administration’s alleged failure to take its own to court over other cases of corruption involving billions of ringgit.

“BN can prosecute me but I will not kill my passion to free Malaysia from corruption. BN can victimise me but will not crush my spirit to free Malaysia from those who steal our children’s future.

“BN can humiliate me by unnecessarily detaining me overnight but will not succeed in changing white to black and black to white, right cannot become wrong and wrong cannot become right,” Lim said in the statement.

Lim was kept overnight at the Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) headquarters in George Town after he was picked up by enforcers yesterday from his Komtar office.

“BN will not break my party's unity — we stand together as leaders and members to battle for reforms towards a better Malaysia with freedom, justice and democracy.

“If BN feels that they can bend or break me by arresting me, they are wrong! I will die standing than live on bended knees,” the DAP secretary-general added.

The leader who is now in his second term as chief minister also disagreed with comparisons drawn between his case and that of former Selangor mentri besar Khir Toyo’s, pointing out that the businesswoman who sold him his house, Phang Li Koon, had not made any losses.

Instead, he said, Phang had recorded a small profit of RM300,000 from the sale.

Lim and Phang are both facing charges over the allegedly corrupt house purchase deal they struck last year.

Lim is facing two charges — one under Section 23 of the MACC Act and another under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

He is accused of using his public office or position to obtain gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew, by approving an application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential purpose during a state planning committee meeting on July 18, 2014.

Section 23 carries a jail term of not more than 20 years and a fine of five times the value of gratification or RM10,000 whichever is higher.

In the Penal Code charge, Lim is alleged to have used his position to obtain gratification by purchasing his house from Phang at RM2.8 million, which was below the property’s market value of RM4.27 million on July 28, 2015.

The second offence is punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, and forfeiture of property upon conviction.

Phang meanwhile has been charged with abetment under Section 109 of the Penal Code over the sale of the house on Jalan Pinhorn to Lim.

Bail was set today at RM1 million for Lim and RM200,000 for Phang.

Bersih 2.0 alleged Guan Eng swift arrest as ‘selective prosecution’

Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 joined the opposition today in calling the corruption charges against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng “selective persecution”.

In a statement, the group said that the way in which the DAP lawmaker was investigated and immediately arrested was far more drastic than others who have also been investigated for corruption.

“The manner in which YAB Lim was arrested reflects selective prosecution as there are many other cases on corruption which have not been dealt with nor with such speed,” the statement read.

Bersih 2.0 was referring to, among others, the RM2.6 billion donation that was deposited into the prime minister’s personal account and Switzerland’s chief prosecutor’s allegations that some RM16.6 billion had been misappropriated from “Malaysian state companies.”

“Investigations into all these cases are still pending for more than two years,” it said.

Instead of arresting the Penang lawmaker, the authorities could have just summoned Lim to appear in court as the latter had been cooperative throughout the investigative process, the electoral reform group suggested.

“There is, therefore, no need to arrest nor for the intimidating, heavy presence of MACC and police officers at Komtar,” it said.

The group reiterated that the case should be brought to court and also urged the judiciary to display the utmost independence when dealing with the Penang chief minister.

“We strongly urge the judge to show his or her independence and fairness when delivering justice in the case,” it said.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) unexpectedly arrested Lim at his office at the Komtar yesterday, arriving as the chief minister was in the middle of chairing a meeting of his state executive council.

This morning, Lim and businesswoman Phang Li Koon were charged over an allegedly corrupt house purchase deal they struck last year.

Lim claimed trial to the charges ― one under Section 23 of the MACC Act and another under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

He was accused of using his public office or position to obtain gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew, by approving an application by Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land to residential purpose during a state planning committee meeting on July 18, 2014.

Phang meanwhile was charged with abetment under Section 109 of the Penal Code over the sale of the house on Jalan Pinhorn to Lim.

Perak mufti wants cinema closed, claim Muslims cinemagoers only go to 'beromen'

Perak mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria urged authorities to reconsider awarding licences for cinemas today, claiming that Muslims frequent them not to watch films but to indulge in “hanky panky”.

In a report by news portal Astro Awani, Harussani was quoted saying cinemas are a form of “vice” that is detrimental to the faith of Muslims in this country.

“The cinemas themselves are a vice, what more sitting at couple seats that encourage others to commit vice in the cinemas,” Harussani told Awani.

“No licence should have been awarded, they are there not to watch movies, but to ‘beromen’,” he added, using the Malay slang that roughly means “hanky panky”, but which is also used to mean “having sex”.

Harussani also urged religious enforcers to nab unmarried couples whenever they see any, and not just in cinemas.

“We spend so much money for preaching, but our own side is encouraging vice,” said Harussani.

“The cinemas are already showing ‘romen’ stories, people who watch them want to ‘romen’ at their own seats; I don’t get why all this is happening.”

Awani reported earlier today that a cinema outlet has banned unmarried Muslims from selecting couple’s seats — adjoining seats without an armrest separating the two — when frequenting its outlets in Perak.

The report said that the Lotus Five Star (LFS) cinema in Seri Iskandar, a township with several tertiary education institutions, had issued the ban following “advice” from the Perak Tengah Municipal Council.

It is unknown what by-law authorises the council to advise LFS’s management to implement the ban.

It is also unclear how the cinema enforces the ban or what action will be taken for those who defy it.

Malay Mail Online cannot yet reach LFS or the council for verification.

LFS operates over 25 cinemas across the country, and is popularly known for showing Hindi and Tamil films.

'Bebas Guan Eng' chant at MACC office in show of support for the Chief Minister

A large number of DAP members and supporters gathered outside the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters here in a show of support for Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The crowd of supporters that started arriving in small groups at 7.30pm has now swelled to over 200.

They started chanting “Bebas Guan Eng” at 9pm while some carried handwritten placards calling for Lim’s release.

All Penang Pakatan Harapan state assemblymen and state executive councillors were present.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat leader Chua Tian Chang and Amanah’s Datuk Mujahid Yusof Rawa also turned up to lend their support.

Lim was arrested at his office in Komtar earlier today and brought to the MACC headquarters along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

He is still being held inside the MACC premises with his counsels, RSN Rayer and Ramkarpal Singh, accompanying him.

Lim is expected to be charged in the Sessions Court here tomorrow on two charges, one under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act and another under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

The first charge involved rezoning approval of Magnificent Emblem’s application to convert agricultural land to residential purpose while the second charge was over Lim’s house purchase allegedly at below market value.

There was currently no charge over the sale of the Taman Manggis land.

Phang Li Koon, who sold the house to Lim, and a director of Magnificent Emblem, was also arrested today and expected to be charged tomorrow.

Rahman Dahlan relieved that the MACC has decided to take action against the chief minister

“Transparency and accountability must be practised, not preached.”

This comment was made by BN Strategic Communications Director Abdul Rahman Dahlan on the arrest of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Lim will be charged in the Sessions Court tomorrow over the purchase of a bungalow in Penang.

In a press statement released this evening, Rahman said it was his hope that the MACC would carry out its duties without fear and favour like they always do.

“And eventually this will bring us the truth and justice.”

He said he raised the matter of the purchase of the bungalow in Jalan Pinhorn in March this year because he “believed there are wrongdoings within the transaction and the people of Penang deserve nothing but the truth”.

“Clearly, DAP’s slogan of being the most clean political party in Malaysia does not hold water, post Lim Guan Eng’s arrest by MACC today.”

He said the course of justice must be a swift one.

“After months of internal investigation and intense public discourse, I am relieved that the MACC has decided to take action against the chief minister.”

Dr M investigated by police in eight cases

Police are investigating eight cases involving former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"We have been investigating many cases related to him," said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

Khalid said the latest investigation was over a remark made Dr Mahathir during the recent Kuala Kangsar by-election, likening Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

"He (Dr Mahathir) had likened the prime minister to Idi Amin, who is also known as the “Butcher of Uganda.

"We have recorded his (Dr Mahathir’s) statement at the Perdana Foundation this morning," he told a press conference after presenting helmets to traffic police officers at Celcom Axiata in Jalan Semarak here today.

Khalid said Dr Mahathir is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code.

Idi Amin was Uganda’s president for eight years in the 1970s.

He is best known for leading a violent regime that saw the killing of tens of thousands of people.

Dr Mahathir had openly campaigned for Pakatan Harapan during the recently concluded by-elections in both Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar, claiming that the contests would be the people's referendum on Najib’s leadership.

This was the claim made by Penang exco member Dr Afif Bahardin via Twitter.

The exco member is believed to be in the chief minister’s office in Komtar.

Also inside is Lim's lawyer RSN Rayer, who arrived at Komtar at 5.40pm.

At press time, two officers have emerged from the office. However, they declined to shed any light on the developments.

There was a noticeably heavy police presence at the entrance to the state administrative building. Lim is currently chairing the state executive council meeting.

It is not known where and when Phang was arrested but a senior state government official confirmed the arrest.

In a statement on May 25, the MACC said it has completed its probe into the bungalow purchase and submitted the investigation papers to Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.

The MACC had also said appropriate legal action would be taken if the A-G was satisfied with the explanation given by the anti-graft body in its investigation papers.

Brazilian police greet tourists with 'Welcome to Hell' sign at Rio airport

Brazilian emergency responders have a message for travelers arriving to the city just ahead of the 2016 Olympics: “Welcome to hell”.

The photo, shared across social media platforms, is generating concern over whether or not Brazil is ready to host the Olympic Games - exacerbated by ongoing trouble stemming from the Zika virus plaguing the country.

“Police and firefighters don't get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe,” the sign reads.

Another sign outside of the airport read, “Welcome, we don’t have hospitals!”

Some 300 police held a rally on Monday rallied to protest unpaid wages and unsatisfactory working conditions. Some even claimed to have not received proper equipment for their jobs - down to basics such as gasoline for cars - and they lack even some of the most necessary of hygienic provisions.

“At the stations we don't have paper or ink for the printers, there's no one to come in to clean and some stations don't have a water supply anymore so the toilets are not functioning,” said an officer identified only as Andre, a member of an elite police unit, told the AFP. “Members of the public bring toilet paper to us.”

One officer told the AFP that he had not been paid in at least five months.

Police say that the unavailability of equipment could prove dangerous during the 5 August Olympics, which are expected to draw more than half a million foreign tourists.

An attack on Rio’s largest hospital, close to the Olympic stadium, sparked security concerns. More than 20 armed men stormed the hospital on 20 June to reportedly free a drug kingpin being held inside, leaving one person dead and two injured.

The police could not call for backup because they do not have a helicopter at their disposal.

Rio officials declared a “state of public calamity” early June in hopes to trigger emergency federal funding amid the country’s financial shortfall. But Interim Gov Francisco Dornelles says that they have yet to receive the R$2.9bn (£657m) Rio officials had requested.

“I’m optimistic about the games, but I have to show reality,” he told O Globo. “[I]f some steps aren’t taken, [the Olympics] could be a big failure.”
