Genting to spend $1.5b for theme park revamp

Genting Malaysia, one of Southeast Asia’s largest entertainment companies, plans to boost its budget to revamp and upgrade its iconic hilltop resort at Genting Highlands north of Kuala Lumpur by 67 per cent to $1.5 billion.
One major upgrade will be made together with partner 20th Century Fox. Around $300 million will be invested into Fox’s first-ever international theme park, dubbed 20th Century Fox World. The park will include rides and attractions based on films like Ice AgeRioAlien Vs PredatorPlanet Of The Apes and Night At The Museum. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on December 17. The park will open in 2016.

Apart from this theme park, Genting plans to add hotel rooms, premium retail outlets, a new cable car station and show arena for 10,000 people, the company said in a statement.
Genting is also expanding abroad, from the Bahamas to Manila, amid restrictions on opening more casinos in Malaysia. The company also opened a casino at the Aqueduct Racetrack in New York in 2012, controls casino operators in the UK and operates Resorts World Sentosa, one of Singapore’s two large gambling resorts. Another resort is planned for Birmingham in the UK in mid-2015.
