Declassifying the Auditor-General’s (A-G) report on 1MDB
might have a negative impact on the nation when it is politicised, MCA’s Ti
Lian Ker said.
While the party’s Central Committee member conceded that the
A-G’s report should “ideally be transparent”, making it available to the public
could lead to the issue being politicised by Opposition leaders.
“Transparency must come in the interest of justice and
accountability, not politicking.
“If the purpose is to politicise the report, instead of
seeking justice, then it defeats the purpose of transparency,” he told FMT.
Ti was responding to a proposal mooted by PKR lawmaker Wong
Chen who suggested the A-G’s report on the state investment arm, currently
classified under the Official Secrets Act, be declassified as the document had
been widely circulated on the Internet.
Wong had said this in reply to Salleh Said Keruak’s
statement that the Sarawak Report may have misled Malaysians into believing
that the A-G’s report on the state investment arm was the whole truth when it
was just one component of many that make up the PAC report.
Salleh’s comments came after news portal Malaysiakini
reported that the London-based Sarawak Report had published some of the
contents of the A-G’s report on 1MDB.
Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang, meanwhile, rubbished
Wong Chen’s comments, labelling it “a faux argument”.
He added that disclosing the report would only promote
people leaking other documents under the OSA.
The documents, he noted, had already been disclosed when the
Public Accounts Committee investigated 1MDB.
“PAC Deputy Chief from the DAP, Tan Seng Giaw, even
confirmed that Prime Minister Najib Razak was not directly involved with 1MDB
and need not be accountable for the issues.
“I think Wong Chen should meet up with Tan Seng Giaw instead
of depending only on the Sarawak Report,” he said when contacted.
