KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — The consumption of “too much chili” might be the cause of food poisioning during the Bersih 4 rally last weekend, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.

The police chief explained that even though the toxicology report was not out yet, only two of the Bersih participants had received treatment and was not even admitted.

“We have not got the toxicology report yet on what is the cause of the food poisoning. Maybe they ate too much chilli.

“There were many roadside stalls during the rally that I saw people buying food from, maybe they got sick after eating from there,” he told reporters after launching a security convention today.

Khalid also poked fun at Bersih medical team’s claim that said 13 participants had suffered food poisoning allegedly from drinking contaminated drinks and were hospitalised.

“Not like many of them were hospitalised. They came in for treatment, took medicines and went back to Bersih (rally),” the police chief jibed.

Polls reform group, Bersih 2.0 which organised the 34-hour rally last weekend alleged that it was an act of “sabotage” to contaminate the drinks which were given to participants.

The group confirmed that police reports had been lodged, urging the police to probe this as soon as possible and to bring the culprits to justice.
