Amid calls for him to cease his campaign in the wake of BN’s
thumping victories in Saturday’s by-elections, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the
outcome only served to strengthen his resolve to unseat Prime Minister Najib
Abdul Razak.
The former premier said those thumping their chests should
in fact be ashamed because the victories were a result of "open
corruption".
"The unexpected BN victories in Sungai Besar and Kuala
Kangsar are a result of cash and goods distribution to voters. This was
witnessed by the public - there was no shame even though they cheated to win.
"The people and nation's dignity is in tatters... the
once dignified people of Malaysia are now following the leader in this manner.
"So those who ask me what my stand is must ask
themselves if they no longer have dignity to the extent that they can be proud
of a victory fuelled by deception, open corruption and clear abuse of
power," he added in a blog post this afternoon
This, he said, only strengthened his belief that Najib must
go.
Mahathir said the victories did not change the fact that the
prime minister had "demeaned the people and the nation" in the
international media.
He argued that ongoing issues like 1MDB and the National
Security Council Act are also reasons not to give up the fight.
"I will continue with efforts to clean the Malaysian government
in any way possible," he said.
BN won Sungai Besar with 9,191 votes and Kuala Kangsar with
6,969 votes.
Najib said the victories are a divine sign that he is on the
right path.
He also snidely told Mahathir to continue campaigning
against BN, since it has contributed to the stunning twin victories.
Earlier today, BN strategic communication director Abdul
Rahman told the former premier to spare himself further humiliation and retire
quietly.
