The prime minister will surely not act against those attempting to recover the country’s assets, says Husam Musa of the class action suit he and Matthias Chang filed to recover 1MDB’s missing assets.
Husam was quizzed today as to whether he feared government action, specifically under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota), against him for his suit.
“I do not think anyone will arrest me. I am acting in the nation’s interest. The PM will surely support me.
“I doubt the PM will arrest an individual attempting to recover money,” he told reporters at a press conference to garner support for the suit he and Chang had filed in New York recently.
“Fear is natural. But we must manage that fear. If we remain in fear, our country is finished.”
Husam said he would write a letter informing the King of the suit filed, and to request for his blessings and prayers for the suit’s success.
“I did this (filed the suit) for the sake of Islam and the followers of other religions.
“All religions stress good governance and transparent stewardship of public funds.
“The developments in the 1MDB issue compelled me as a Muslim to see just where we as Muslims stand in the matter,” Husam said.
Chang is a lawyer and former political secretary to former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad while Husam was a former PAS vice-president, expelled from the party in May.
The suit filed by Husam and Chang names as defendants Riza Aziz, the stepson of Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Razak, businessman Low Taek Jho (better known as Jho Low), Riza’s film company Red Granite Pictures, Goldman Sachs Group and several others.
It points to assets listed by the US Department of Justice in its verified complaints for asset forfeiture, which the suit claims were obtained from money misappropriated from 1MDB.
The assets include a “Park Laurel condominium overlooking Central Park”, Park Lane Hotel in Central Park South, New York, and a residential home in Los Angeles.
“According to the government’s verified complaint and various news accounts, Riza Aziz and Jho Low spent much of 1MDB’s money in the United States on real properties, business ventures, yachts, parties, artwork, clothing, jewellery, and other luxuries,” the suit states.
