Controversial Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos has vowed to organise a rally to counter the Bersih 5 demonstration he claimed is being coordinated by “traitors out to violate the country’s democracy.”
“I welcome the ‘Bersih 5’ rally and the Red Shirts movement is now ready to face them,” he said in a press statement.
The Umno Sungai Besar division chief also labelled the upcoming rally by the electoral reform group as an act of “desperation” and subsequently cautioned that the counter rally would be held on the same day as Bersih 5.
Earlier today Bersih 2.0 announced it would hold a rally against the government’s continuing “denial and inaction” over the scandal surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The decision to hold the rally followed the lawsuits filed recently by the United States Department of Justice to recover billions in assets allegedly purchased using funds misappropriated from the state investment arm.
Bersih 2.0 however have yet to reveal when and where they plan to hold the rally.
The announcement of the Bersih 5 rally was however met with disdain by Jamal, who lashed out at Chin, comparing her to a “dog barking on the hill.”
“She and her henchmen are planning to take to the streets and topple the government led by Prime Minister Najib Razak,” Jamal alleged.
He said that the upcoming rally by Bersih 2.0 would not only threaten public order, but would provoke and potentially undermine the country’s security.
In September last year, Jamal organised a similar counter rally – held a little over two weeks after the Bersih 4 rally – that saw thousands of people wearing red gathering at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur in a show of support for Najib and Umno.
The rally took an ugly turn however as it promoted anti-Chinese sentiments with racial slurs directed at the Chinese community uttered throughout the demonstration.
