The Cabinet has given its nod to ride-sharing services with the Land and Public Transport Commission (SPAD) given the task of working out the terms and conditions.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi confirmed yesterday the Cabinet had given its approval for the legalisation of the ride-sharing services such as Uber and Grab.
“We will come up with a new transformation plan for the taxi industry. The plan will be drawn up by SPAD,” he said.
It was reported yesteday the Cabinet made its decision after a presentation by SPAD CEO Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, where he proposed an overhaul of the traditional taxi industry.
Eleven initiatives were laid out including a proposal to transform the industry with improvement to the Teksi 1Malaysia model, and providing individual taxi permits to drivers with clean track records.
SPAD aims to table a bill on the legalisation of Uber and Grab during the Parliament meeting in November.
Grab South-east Asia Country head Jaygan Fu said the Cabinet approval validates the role Grab was playing in providing an additional travelling option.
“This last step is coming closer to realising our social mission to improve the transportation industry and the livelihood and working conditions of our drivers both taxi or ride sharing,” he said in a media statement.
Fu said they are looking forward to working closely and dialogue with relevant authorities, especially with SPAD.
“We need to understand the proposed amendments to the current regulations which also represent the government’s stance in reflecting the society’s demand for ride-hailing services,” he said.
The ride sharing services have seen their share of controversy including reports of cabbies being involved in altercations with Uber or Grabcar drivers.
