The courier jet ploughed into the road after slipping off the runway Twitter |
A cargo plane overshot a runway while trying to land at an airport in Italy, causing it to get wedged across a ring road.
Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo was temporarily closed after the Boeing 737 arriving from Paris lost control during landing in the early hours of Friday morning.
The courier jet skidded off the runway, which appeared to be wet after heavy rain, before smashing through metal barriers and coming to rest on the road which circles the airport.
Local reports confirmed there were motorists on the road at the time of the crash but no one was harmed, and the plane’s three crew members similarly emerged unscathed.
The accident was most likely due to bad weather conditions in the area as the region was hit by a powerful storm, according to the Corriere della Sera.
The report also said the plane destroyed a few rental cars and damaged the parking lot before coming to rest.
A large crane was used to remove the stranded plane after the emergency services rushed to the scene at around 4am.
In a statement, the airport operator Sacbo confirmed the site had resumed operations at around 6.45am, with some delays to scheduled flights.
Several flights to and from Bergamo were cancelled, including some from Ryanair, while others were rerouted through nearby Milan Malpensa airport.
