Along with millions of Malaysians, the Johor royal family will also be rooting for the nation’s badminton mixed doubles team to take home the first-ever Olympic gold in the finals against Indonesia Wednesday night.
In a post on his official Facebook account, Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar said that he would be tuning in to watch the much-anticipated match, which could potentially win Malaysia’s first ever Olympics gold medal.
“My family and I will be eagerly watching the mixed double pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying’s match tonight and we pray they will be able to prevail over titans Indonesia and deliver Malaysia’s first Olympic gold medal,” he wrote in the post.
Sultan Ibrahim also congratulated dynamic duo Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong for marching into the finals following their victorious men’s doubles semi-finals Tuesday night.
“I would like to congratulate both players for their exemplary grit, tenacity and courage that showcased the best of Malaysian sports,” he said, adding that he was especially proud of the fact that Tan, 27, is a Johorean.
“Remember, you not only represent Malaysia but also Johor. Give your best to bring pride and glory to Johor and Malaysia,” he reminded Tan who hails from Bukit Gambir in Tangkak.
In the post, Sultan Ibrahim also noted that Tan, who now has a world ranking of No. 7, had represented Malaysia at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games with Goh V Shem.
They had gone on to take the gold medal and were the only medalists in the tournament who were not seeded.
The Ruler also commended divers Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong who won Malaysia’s first medal, a silver medal, in the 10m synchronised platform event, as well as Azizulhasni Awang for the bronze medal in the men’s track cycling Keirin.
“I wish all our athletes in the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil all the very best. We are rooting for all of you back home,” said the sports-loving Ruler.
The post has gone viral quickly with over a thousand likes within half an hour of being posted at almost 7pm on Wednesday.
