Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s proposed new party are exclusively for Bumiputeras only.
Confirming this, former Langkawi Umno member Anina Saadudin said a protem committee had been established for the party, which will have Mahathir as party chairman, and former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin as president.
“This new party caters to the Bumiputeras, even the name of the party has been set and now all that’s left is to just wait for an official announcement later,” Anina said.
She was present at a three-hour discussion between Mahathir, Muhyiddin and other former Umno figures, at Mahathir’s residence last night.
Kamarulzaman Habibbur Rahman, the chairman of a group of rebel Umno branch chiefs (Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia, or GKCM) will be the secretary of the new party.
Anina and Kamalrulzaman were both sacked from Umno for breach of discipline when they had voiced out their dissatisfaction with the party leadership.
Also present at last night’s meeting were former Kedah MB Mukhriz Mahathir, former Umno minister Sanusi Junid, and youth activist Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.
According to Anina, seven other names have also been submitted to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) and the party’s full committee will be formed after the registration is approved.
Meanwhile, Mahathir loyalist Khairuddin Abu Hassan said the registration for the party will begin in the near future.
“This is what loyal supporters have been waiting for, and now it’s becoming official,” Khairuddin said.
News reports have said that the meeting between Muhyiddin and the RoS could happen as early as tomorrow.
Former Umno vice-president Shafie Apdal had earlier this month said that he had turned down an offer from Mahathir to be the deputy president of the soon-to-be launched party, as he wanted to start his own Sabah-based political party.
