Umno members who are unfaithful to the party should leave for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The rural and regional development minister said there was no room in Umno for those whose loyalties were not entirely with the Malay nationalist party.
“If there are members who are not loyal to Umno, it’s better if they leave. We don’t need enemies within the party,” he was quoted saying by Malay language daily Sinar Harian.
“It is easier to face an external enemy than an enemy within. So it would be appropriate if they joined that party (Parti Pribumi).”
He was reportedly responding to Parti Pribumi pro-tem vice-president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s call for their supporters who are still in Umno to remain and “spy” for them.
Mukhriz was reported by Chinese language daily Oriental Daily on Tuesday as saying that supporters unwilling to leave Umno due to personal reasons could stay in Umno and help “collect information”.
Parti Pribumi was initiated by several prominent Malay leaders after leaving Umno in a bid to win Malay support, especially in the rural areas, at the next general elections due by 2018.
Its pro-tem chairman is Dr Mahathir while the president is Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, formerly Umno deputy president.
Muhyiddin, who was dropped as deputy prime minister last year, applied to register the Bumiputera-centred Parti Pribumi with the Registrar of Societies last Tuesday.
