Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has allegedly accused Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as being Malaysian Official No. 1 (MO1) in the US Department of Justice (DoJ) lawsuit and condemned a lawmaker who named the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong instead.
The DoJ is seeking to seize dozens of properties tied to state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), saying that over US$3.5bil was misappropriated from the institution.
In a statement on Friday, the former deputy prime minister hit out at Langkawi MP Datuk Nawawi Ahmad for allegedly naming the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong as MO1.
He said that Nawawi by dragging the King into the corruption issue had committed criminal defamation.
"The position of the King is the highest institution under the Federal Constitution.
"Therefore, all Malaysians must rise to insist that the Attorney-General (A-G) show the same vigour in defending this institution as the A-G did in clearing Najib from allegations of corruption, in relation to the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal," he said.
According to Muhyiddin, issues cannot be swept under the carpet.
"I was sacked as deputy prime minister and then as deputy president for Umno for raising this scandal, for seeking that Umno and the government come clean on this.
"By my sacking, Najib thinks his corruption can be swept under the carpet," he claimed.
He added the 136-page DoJ report on 1MDB showed without a doubt that the alleged corruption was the result of one government official identified only as MO1.
"The court papers showed without doubt that the plunder of this government corporation went all the way up to a corrupt government official identified only as MO1. Enough description has been given as to who this MO1 is," he claimed.
The Pagoh MP also condemned state muftis and government ulamaks who had not commented on the scandal and hit out at Umno grassroots for not making an attempt to “correct its supreme council and top leadership”.
"When we see all these Umno leaders and politicians behave the way they do now, we must learn to accept that Umno is beyond redemption.
"Umno cannot be saved if it is incapable of removing its corrupt leaders. Umno must be buried if it cannot defend the institution of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong but is more concerned with defending its president," he alleged.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Nawawi denied making allegations linking the King to 1MDB.
Nawawi said he had made a police report over the issue at the Ulu Kelang police station.
