Umno members should be wary of Nazri Aziz now that he has admitted he is closer to DAP than he is to MCA and respects the Opposition party, Ti Lian Ker warned.
Labelling the Tourism and Culture Minister a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, Ti, who is MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman, accused Nazri of sucking up to the DAP the way former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has.
“I wonder if Nazri will eventually join the DAP and stand alongside former Umno members?” Ti told FMT, alluding to the likes of Mahathir, former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir.
Mahathir, Muhyiddin and Mukhriz have since gone on to set up Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) which aims to topple Umno and Barisan Nasional.
Ti also took Nazri to task for declaring himself “big” and therefore having the right to be arrogant, stating such childish behaviour would not sit well with voters.
Earlier today, Nazri, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, continued to attack Ti after the latter suggested last week that Umno do away with its fear-mongering along racial and religious lines to gain the support of Malay voters.
In a report by Malaysiakini, Nazri was quoted as saying that the “big” needed to discipline the “small” crew members on a ship, in response to Ti’s advise against belittling the “crew” of the Barisan Nasional “ship.”
Ti went on to state that the fact Nazri seemingly took offence with his suggestion that Umno stop playing the race-religious card showed that Nazri still believed in communal politics at a time when voters were progressing towards a more Malaysian way of life.
The MCA spokesman said whatever advice he gave Umno should be accepted with an open mind and that he only questioned Nazri’s relationship with DAP after the latter had attacked him about his suggestion.
“I said what I have said. It is up to Umno to listen to the advice given. I do not wish to prolong this matter further.”
Ti also dismissed Nazri’s claim that he was dropped from contesting in Kuantan in the 2013 General Election by Chua Soi Lek because the former MCA president wanted to “get rid of him.”
Nazri had also alleged Ti was an executive councillor when Chua decided to “discard” him (Ti).
Ti responded that it was obvious the minister had not done his homework.
“Firstly, I was never an executive councillor. I was a three-term state assemblyman elected in a Malay majority constituency in 1995, 1999 and 2004.
“I was not dropped by Chua Soi Lek. I was dropped because I am a reformist in the party. After being dropped as a state assemblyman, I decided to stand in the Central MCA leadership to bring my desired changes. I succeeded and managed to become a Central Committee Member for the past three terms.
“I have no interest nor did I lobby to stand under both Chua Soi Lek and now, Liow Tiong Lai’s leadership.”
Liow is the current MCA president.
