Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak today outlined seven principles which he said the party must practise to remain relevant and survive.
He said these were the party’s struggle, unity, leadership, teamwork, clear people-friendly policies, suitable approach, and boldness and wisdom.
Practising these principles would ensure that the party remained strong in facing political competition in the country, he told reporters after opening the Sri Gading Umno division delegates meeting at the Parit Raja community hall in Muar.
Also present was Sri Gading Umno division chief Ab Aziz Kaprawi, who is deputy transport minister.
Salleh, who is the communications and multimedia minister, also said that it was needless for Umno and the Barisan Nasional to be concerned about the newly-formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia because it would have no effect on Umno.
He said it was more important to explain to party members and others why they should give their undivided support to Umno and the BN.
“The new party was formed for a certain purpose. I am sure there will be disputes among them (the leaders) because they have their own political interests,” he said.
Salleh said Umno members should not be concerned because it was normal for such developments in any country practising the democratic system.
Commenting on the recent meeting of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, he said it was merely a publicity stunt.
He said the political struggles of Dr Mahathir and Anwar would not be in sync because they had differing political views.
Salleh said Umno and BN had brought stability and peace and these wouldprevail as long as the people continued to support the BN.
“Only the BN has policies that fulfil the people's needs. But the opposition parties do not have such policies; they only want to seize power without any sincerity,” he said.
Salleh said that in this connection, Umno leaders and members should go down to the ground and provide explanations to the people on the various issues.
