Parti Peribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he will work hand in hand with the Opposition to free jailed ex-Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from prison.

The former Umno deputy president, as quoted in an online news portal, today said certain members of the public had asked him to help release Anwar.

Muhyiddin said he would work towards achieving this if given the green light by supporters. “I received requests from the public to help free Anwar (from prison).

“We need radical reforms on the electoral system in order to set all Malaysians free. Only if there is a change in leadership, we will be able to determine the fate of Anwar.

“We must not expect (Prime Minister Datuk Seri) Najib to free Anwar," Muhyiddin said at a seminar organised by PKR.

Muhyiddin, expressing his sympathy for Anwar’s incarceration, said he was “deeply saddened by his (Anwar’s) life in prison”.

"If we can agree that setting Anwar free is an important goal, then we can come together to reach a consensus on this matter when we form a new government," he remarked.

Opposition parties, Muhyiddin said, should unite and support the newly-formed political party led by him, chaired by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"To solve the problems, we must change the government, and all BN leaders should be removed," he said, adding that he would not consider re-joining Umno as the party has been “beset by corruption and mismanagement” for years.
