DAP's Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said the opposition and even Umno splinter Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) may consider working with MCA if it were to quit BN.

This was after Umno supreme council Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz hurled a torrent of insults at MCA and asked that it quit the ruling coalition.

"Perhaps if MCA acts as an independent party, then the opposition parties and even former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new party may be interested in working with them to defeat Umno in the next general election," he said in a statement today.

Lim said MCA should take Nazri's suggestion and quit BN as well as resigning from all government positions including as ministers, state executive councillors, local councillors and other positions.

"Those who refuse to do so would be seen as traitors to MCA's struggle who put more emphasis on their own pockets," he said.

Lim said Nazri's attack against MCA confirmed the perception that MCA was subservient to Umno.

"MCA is not in a position to make demands to Umno. The MCA leadership can only ask 'how high' when asked to jump by Umno," he said.

Yesterday, Nazri said it was better to be a "jaguh kampung" (village hero) that can win 88 parliamentary seats compared to MCA which can only manage a handful.

He was responding to MCA central committee member Ti Lian Ker, who urged Umno to shed its jaguh kampung politics which played on racial and religious fear, to garner support from the countryside but at the expense of BN partners and urban support.

Nazri went on to tell MCA to quit BN, claiming that the only reason MCA could even win its remaining seven parliamentary seats was due to Umno's help.
