Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) of Pakatan Harapan is confident of tasting victory if it gets to represent the Opposition pact in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, says its president Mohamad Sabu.
In an interview with Sinar Harian, Mohamad, commonly known as Mat Sabu, said Amanah was by no means a mosquito party and could even compete with PAS, which will be taking part in both by-elections.
He said based on his 37 years in PAS, the Islamist party could only win a significant number of votes if it joined forces with other parties. He said based on his own experience, PAS would lose its deposits “from Ipoh to Johor Bahru.”
He added that in Selangor, PAS would not lose its deposits in Sabak Bernam and Tanjung Karang, but noted that the Sungai Besar constituency was relatively new.
“PAS only began to garner a significant number of votes when it was with the Barisan Alternatif and then later in Pakatan Rakyat.
“When it was on its own, PAS used to get very few votes. That is why we are confident that PAS will get the same number of votes it used to get when it stood on its own, and not the votes it got in the last general election, when it lost the Sungai Besar seat by only 300 votes.”
Mat Sabu, who was formerly PAS deputy president, said the Islamist party was only strong as an organisation, but fared badly when it came to votes.
When asked about the possibility of multi-cornered fights in the two upcoming by-elections, Mat Sabu said it could likely happen, but was confident Amanah would remain victorious if selected to contest in both areas, citing the support of the middle ground for Amanah and Pakatan Harapan.
The by-elections for the two parliamentary seats were triggered by the deaths of their incumbents, Noriah Kasnon and Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak earlier this month.
The by-elections will be held simultaneously on June 18.
