Maverick DAP assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu has been told to join Gerakan, following his participation in a roundtable with the Barisan Nasional party last weekend.
A disgruntled RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) said Teh could stand for elections under Gerakan next year.
“Memalukan! (Embarrassing) Why don’t you contest under Gerakan (in the next election?)” Rayer told his fellow colleague who sat next to him during a debate session at the State Legislative Assembly today.
A heated argument then ensued, with both representatives telling each other to stop the “sandiwara” (drama).
Teh told Rayer to stand down as it was his floor. They continued bickering to the extent that their screaming became unintelligible.
“I am not giving Seri Delima way, he has already debated against me at length earlier,” Teh said.
Deputy Speaker Maktar Shapee then told Rayer to stand down. But a visibly upset Rayer kept standing up and gesturing at Teh, saying he was an embarrassment to the party.
Teh told the Speaker that Rayer’s comments should not be retracted and this should be reflected in the Hansard.
“I will allow him to say whatever he wants. I am going to let the rakyat decide who is ‘tengah bersandiwara’ (being dramatic),” Teh said.
Last weekend, Teh was part of a dialogue organised by Penang Gerakan Youth, titled “Should a chief minister’s term be limited to two terms?”
Present were Penang Gerakan Youth Acting Chief Jason Loo and Teluk Bahang assemblyman Shah Headan Hussain Ayoob Shah, together with branch leaders from MCA and the People’s Progressive Party, who took turns to share their views.
In defence of his attendance at the dialogue, Teh told the august house that being in the Democratic Action Party meant it had to be open minded.
“If a party cannot be open-minded, cannot be friends, what are we going to do?”
Teh then resumed his debate, with a fuming Rayer bowing out for a break.
The assembly continues until 10pm, with a 90-minute break at 6.30pm.
