Guan Eng interview at MACC while Sarawak Polls Heating Up
The Anti-corruption officers is questioning Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for the second consecutive day, and had his statement recorded, over allegations of corruption and conflict of interest in deals related to his purchase of a bungalow for RM2.8 million.
He arrived at the MACC office here at 10.05am, accompanied by lawyer R.S.N. Rayer, Bernama reported.
Reports have been lodged with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission regarding Lim’s purchase of the double-storey bungalow in Jalan Pinhorn and its relationship to the state government’s sale of land said to have been earmarked for public housing in Taman Manggis, Jalan Zainal Abidin.
Lim and his wife Betty Chew were questioned and had their statements recorded. They were accompanied by their lawyers, Rayer and Gobind Singh Deo for Lim, and Ramkarpal Singh for Chiew.
Also questioned were Lim’s special officer, Jeffrey Chew, and a staff member of Winbond Management and Consultant Sdn Bhd, owned by the businesswoman who sold Lim the bungalow.
They left the MACC office at 7pm on Friday, nine hours after they had gone to the office, at 9.30am. They were allowed a three-hour lunch break, the commission said in a statement.
The bungalow and Taman Manggis deals were the subject of questions in the Dewan Rakyat, when the MP for Tasek Gelugor, Shabudin Yahaya, questioned whether the two deals had been done below the market value.
Lim bought the house for RM2.8 million from businesswoman Phang Li Koon, said to be a friend of Lim’s wife. Phang is a business partner of the man who has a majority shareholding in a Kuala Lumpur-based company that bought the Taman Manggis state land for RM11 million for a hospital-cum-hotel project.
It was also alleged that the company had bought the land at below market price and the owner had intended to sell the company for RM70 million.
