Datuk Ahmad Maslan has explained that he avoided reporters' questions on cooking oil and petrol prices because the issues do not fall under his ministry's purview.

The Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti) took to social media to clarify his action at Parliament on Tuesday.

"I did not answer when the media yesterday asked about oil prices because everyone knows cooking oil comes under Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry and petrol is under the Finance Ministry.

"I am in Miti," tweeted Ahmad Maslan on Wednesday.

A video, which surfaced on social media on Tuesday, showed Ahmad Maslan greeting reporters and Parliament staff but seemingly ignoring media questions related to petrol and cooking oil prices drew criticism from netizens.

The recent removal of cooking oil subsidies as well as the consecutive increases in petrol prices sparked concern among Malaysians over the rising cost of living.
