Foreign intervention in terms of funding political parties in the country should not be allowed to continue without monitoring as it can threaten the country's sovereignty, said Umno Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

He said receiving foreign funding for a local organisation was a very serious issue as it could topple the country's leadership.

"If it (foreign political funding) is allowed to continue without checks, there will not be foreign interference in the country's politics, but also elements of subversion whether the funds are legal or not.

"This is one of the reasons why Umno and Barisan Nasional want a law (on political funding be drafted). The problem now is that if it really happens, is there any law to control it," he told a press conference after chairing the Umno Information Bureau monthly meeting here today.

It was reported that a foreign group chaired by Soros had been funding several local organisations in its programmes to influence the outcome of the next general election.

Annuar stressed that such reports reinforced the need to enact a law to regulate political funding, despite objections from the opposition.

Meanwhile, Annuar said Umno had not discussed the action by Tambun member of Parliament Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah who was alleged to have revealed government secrets when debating the Supply Bill 2017 in the Dewan Rakyat recently.

"I have met with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) (to discuss) on a number of issues but the issue (Ahmad Husni's speech) was not raised by the prime minister.

"I have met with the (Umno) secretary-general (Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor) as well as Umno Political Bureau committee members but they did not raise the matter," he said.

Yesterday, Ahmad Husni who is also former second finance minister, arrived at Bukit Aman to have his statement recorded over the matter but was told that the session had been postponed to next week.
