The media should stop painting a negative picture only of the Red Shirts, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
Speaking at a press conference in the Bukit Aman police headquarters, Khalid insisted that both Bersih 2.0 and the Red Shirts were “causing problems.”
“I keep saying, don’t ask me about just one group. Don’t try and paint a negative picture of only the Red Shirts. It is both the yellow and red that are causing problems,” said Khalid.
He said this when asked if Red Shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos had submitted a notice to the police for his proposed gathering on Saturday, Nov 5.
“Not that I know of. I have not been informed of any notice. Everybody knows that he has been making a lot of statements, but they come to nothing.
“The same can be said of yellow (Bersih 2.0). Did they give us notice when they went to Johor and all the other states? They both need to abide by the Peaceful Assembly Act,” he said.
Previously, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced the government’s decision to prohibit both groups from gathering on Nov 19, despite both serving a 10-day notice to the police in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
He said the venue proposed by Bersih 2.0, the organisers of the Bersih 5 rally, was on the prohibited list of venues under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
Zahid’s announcement came shortly after the decision by Kuala Lumpur City Hall to reject the applications of both Bersih 2.0 and the Red Shirts to gather at Dataran Merdeka.
